A heartfelt moment at the Critics Choice Awards 2026 as Chelsea Handler reflects on Rob Reiner’s legacy, following a year marked by tragedy and loss in Hollywood.

Emotions ran high at this year’s Critics Choice Awards, where Chelsea Handler, serving as host, paused the evening’s festivities to pay tribute to Rob Reiner. The acclaimed director, whose influence on the film industry spanned decades, was remembered not for his accolades, but for his character. Handler’s words struck a chord with those gathered, many of whom had worked alongside Reiner or counted him as a friend.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered dead in their Brentwood residence on 14 December. The official report cited “multiple sharp force injuries” as the cause. Their son, Nick Reiner, now faces charges in connection with the deaths, casting a shadow over the awards season’s usual celebrations.

Handler’s Tribute: Remembering a Friend

Handler, addressing the audience, began with a simple truth:

“Everyone in this room knows that the nicest guy in Hollywood was Rob Reiner.”

She went on to describe the warmth and familiarity Reiner exuded, saying,

“Anyone who ever spent time with Rob Reiner knows that the minute you met him, he felt like an old friend when you were in a conversation with him.”

She recalled his attentiveness and wit, noting how he would engage in lively discussions on everything from politics to the latest beauty fads. Handler’s recollections painted a picture of a man who was present, curious, and always ready with a question or a quip.

Legacy Beyond the Screen

Yet, Handler was keen to highlight the qualities that truly set Reiner and his wife apart. She singled out their commitment to causes close to their hearts, all rooted in a fundamental principle.

“Rob and Michele were tireless in their efforts to so many important causes, all stemming from one basic idea: decency, and that we should all look out for each other,”

she said, urging those present to carry that spirit forward.

“I think we can all agree that we definitely need more of that,”

Handler added, inviting the room to reflect on the values the couple embodied.

Her remarks served as a gentle reminder of the impact individuals can have, not just through their work, but through the way they treat others. Handler encouraged the audience to use the evening as an opportunity to honour those ideals, stating,

“So let’s use tonight as a reminder of that decency and as a reminder of everything Rob and Michele represented and fought so hard for.”

Award Highlights and Lighter Moments

Elsewhere during the ceremony, the spotlight shifted to the year’s standout achievements. One Battle After Another clinched the top prize for Best Picture, with Paul Thomas Anderson recognised as Best Director. Timothée Chalamet took home Best Actor for his performance in Marty Supreme, while Jessie Buckley was named Best Actress for her role in Hamnet.

There was room for levity as well. Jimmy Kimmel, collecting the award for Best Talk Show, couldn’t resist a dig at a familiar figure, crediting Donald Trump for his win thanks to, as he put it,

“all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day.”

The evening, though tinged with sadness, managed to balance reflection with celebration, marking another memorable chapter in the awards’ history.
