HBO Max just dropped A24’s meta mockumentary The Moment, starring Grammy winner Charli XCX as a fictionalized version of herself — now streaming.

Right, so here’s a bit of news for anyone who fancies a genre-bending, pop-culture-skewering watch: HBO Max has picked up A24’s latest meta mockumentary, The Moment, which stars none other than Charli XCX. If you missed this one at the cinema (and judging by the reviews, plenty of people did), it’s streaming from today.

Yes, It’s Actually a Mockumentary – Charli Plays Herself (Sort Of)

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill concert film. Charli XCX plays a fictionalised version of herself, gearing up for her first-ever arena tour. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes as a pop star, this is… well, not that, but something much stranger and more tongue-in-cheek.

How Did Critics Take It?

Mixed, to be honest. The Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 66%, so a fairly lukewarm response. Interestingly, audiences were a bit warmer on it, giving it a 75% 'Popcornmeter' rating. So, your mileage may vary, but enough people seem to have found it entertaining.

The Cast: Blink-and-You’ll-Miss-Half-the-Cameos

  • Charli XCX (of course, as herself-ish)
  • Rachel Sennott
  • Rosanna Arquette
  • Hailey Benton Gates
  • Kate Berlant
  • Jaime Demetriou
  • Kylie Jenner (yes, really)
  • Isaac Powell
  • Alexander Skarsgård
  • Rish Shah
  • Arielle Dombasle
  • Trew Mullen
  • Sarah Beck Mather
  • Riana Duce
  • Richard Perez

Who’s Behind This Thing?

Aidan Zamiri takes the director’s chair for the first time with this one, co-writing the script alongside Bertie Brandes, off a concept thought up by Charli herself. It’s produced by Charli XCX and David Hinojosa (so a bit of a passion project, clearly). The behind-the-scenes crew includes Sean Price Williams (cinematography), Billy Sneddon (editing), Francesca Di Mottola (production design), and Alexander Guy Cook (composer).

What’s the Elevator Pitch?

'A rising pop star navigates the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut.'

That’s the official synopsis, but basically, expect a lot of send-ups about the music industry, celebrity nonsense, and Charli having a laugh at her own expense.

Charli XCX Is Booked and Busy

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Charli, you’d know she was just in IFC’s horror flick Faces of Death with Barbie Ferreira. Up next, she’s popping up in Olivia Wilde’s upcoming erotic comedy I Want Your Sex at the end of July, and in Cathy Yan’s new thriller-dramedy The Gallerist alongside Natalie Portman.
