Chaos on Set: Taylor Russell’s Sudden Departure Shakes Michael B. Jordan’s Thomas Crown Affair
Rumours swirl as Taylor Russell exits Michael B. Jordan’s Thomas Crown Affair remake, with whispers of on-set tensions, creative clashes, and unexpected production woes. What’s really happening behind the scenes?
Michael B. Jordan’s ambitious reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair has been anything but smooth sailing. From the outset, the production has been dogged by whispers of discord, and the situation only escalated when Taylor Russell, initially cast in a leading role, abruptly left the project in July 2025. The reasons for her exit have been the subject of much speculation, with some citing creative disagreements with Jordan, who is not only starring but also directing.
Adding fuel to the fire, a recent claim on social media suggested that the film’s wardrobe was sourced straight off the rack from Bottega, a far cry from the iconic, tailored looks that defined previous versions starring Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan. The same user hinted that costuming woes were just the tip of the iceberg, with further troubles brewing behind the scenes.
Costume Controversy and Creative Tensions
The involvement of Ruth E. Carter, an Oscar-winning designer who previously collaborated with Jordan on Black Panther and Sinners, should have been a guarantee of sartorial flair. Oddly enough, it was Russell herself who first announced Carter’s participation. Jordan, for his part, seemed genuinely enthusiastic about working with Carter again, describing his take on the story as more personal, with higher stakes and a continued emphasis on style and romance. As he put it:
I didn’t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination. The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn’t land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance. Ruth [E. Carter] is the queen. We’ve got an incredible cast — Adria [Arjona], Kenneth [Branagh], Pilou [Asbæk], Danai [Gurira].
Despite these assurances, the chatter about lacklustre costumes and on-set friction has only intensified, with many fans linking the latest round of complaints to Russell’s departure. Officially, her exit was chalked up to creative differences, but the rumour mill has been relentless.
Behind the Curtain: Russell’s Exit and On-Set Drama
Russell, who made a name for herself in Waves and Bones and All, was seen as a promising choice for the role of the insurance investigator—a part previously played by Faye Dunaway and Rene Russo. Her sudden removal, however, sparked a flurry of theories. Industry insider Jeff Sneider claimed that Jordan was dissatisfied with Russell’s performance on her first day, leading to her being replaced after it failed to improve. Adria Arjona has since stepped into the role.
Michael B. Jordan recast Taylor Russell in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' due to the actress reportedly shooting one day, during which time her performance "was not improving" throughout the course of the day.
Adria Arjona has since taken over the role.

Not everyone is buying the official line. Some fans insist that the real reason for Russell’s exit was a personal conflict with Jordan, alleging that she rebuffed his advances on set, which supposedly led to her dismissal. Others point to earlier sightings of the pair together in London, which had already sparked rumours of a romance gone sour. One source claimed, “Something had happened between Taylor and Michael.” The relationship, apparently, was already strained before filming began, and only deteriorated further, prompting Russell to walk away.
Fan Reactions and the Fallout
The latest uproar over the film’s costuming has only reignited debate about Russell’s departure. Many viewers are convinced that the production’s troubles began the moment she was let go. Social media has been awash with comments lamenting the loss of both Russell and the film’s signature style, with some suggesting that her decision to leave was a wise one given the circumstances.

Taylor Russell vindication coming soon
Taylor Russel’s voodoo won and rightfully so
I had a feeling that Taylor Russell was dodging something. I'm not sold on MBJ as a director.
How come the clothes are so cheap for The Thomas Crown Affair remake! Yet there’s a scene with Michael B. Jordan with a Ferrari F40! Which is an expensive car to rent for this movie! Now it makes much more sense why Taylor Russell left! She made the right decision for her career! pic.twitter.com/lXtKInEgWF
With Arjona now in the lead, and a supporting cast including Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, and Aiysha Hart, the production presses on. Meanwhile, Russell is set to appear in the Korean film Hope alongside Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Hoyeon, as well as a remake of Single White Female with Jenna Ortega.
The Thomas Crown Affair is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 5 March 2027.
