CBS doubles down on Beyond the Gates, handing the hit soap a two-season pickup for Seasons 3 and 4 during its fall schedule reveal.

Well, this is something you don’t see every day: not only is CBS sticking with a daytime soap, but they're doubling down and locking in two more seasons. If you had ‘soap operas making a comeback’ on your TV bingo card, pat yourself on the back — because Beyond the Gates is officially sticking around through at least 2028.

Two More Years in the Gated Community

CBS just dropped the news during their big fall schedule press conference: Beyond the Gates isn’t just coming back for a third round, but they’ve already committed to Season 4 as well. So if you’re a daytime soap fan clamoring for something new (or, at this point, anything new), this is about as solid a promise as you’ll get in TV land.

In their words, this was more than just a safe renewal. To quote CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach:

'Beyond The Gates immediately improved the time period, has enthusiastically been embraced by the daytime community and is getting good critical acclaim in the press.'

So yeah, CBS is happy. And honestly, that’s not exactly common with fresh daytime soaps.

This Show Broke Some Serious Streaks

Here’s what makes this actually a big deal:

  • First new network soap in a quarter-century: Before Beyond the Gates showed up in 2025, the last time an original daytime soap debuted on a major broadcast network was Passions all the way back in 1999. That’s a 26-year drought.
  • Major representation milestone: It’s also the first daytime soap centered around a mostly African-American cast since Generations in 1989. That’s not just overdue, it’s frankly bizarre that it took this long.

Who’s Behind the Scenes (and on Screen)

The brains behind this one is Michele Val Jean, who’s not only the creator and showrunner, but co-writes the show with Tracey Thomson. Behind-the-scenes cred is legit.

And in terms of cast, honestly, this is a pretty stacked ensemble if you’ve been following Black TV or just know your daytime regulars. The core group includes Tamara Tunie (seriously underrated), Clifton Davis, Daphnée Duplaix, Karla Mosley, Alex Alegria, Lauren Buglioli, Brandon Claybon, Timon Kyle Durrett, Sean Freeman, Ben Gavin, Marquita Goings, Jibre Hordges, Jen Jacob, Maurice Johnson, Trisha Mann-Grant, Mike Manning, RhonniRose Mantilla, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Muhammad, and Arielle Prepetit.

The Story: High Drama in Maryland’s Finest Zip Code

The show follows a wealthy Black family living inside a fancy, gated community just outside Baltimore, Maryland. There’s all the messy, tangled drama you’d expect from a soap (think scandals, secrets, betrayals — you get the idea). But it’s also telling stories you don’t usually see front and center in the daytime slot, and clearly, that’s working for viewers.

How’s It Really Doing?

CBS hasn’t been super open about regular ratings, but the premiere episode pulled in 2.28 million viewers with L+3 numbers (that’s live viewing plus anyone who watched in the three days after). Not only is that nothing to sneeze at for daytime TV, but CBS says it actually bumped up the average for that hour by 13.6% compared to what was sitting in that slot before.

For what it’s worth: as of now, Beyond the Gates has run through 267 episodes — definitely not a one-season wonder.

So yeah, if you’re into soaps or have just been waiting for something fresh in daytime, Beyond the Gates clearly has staying power. CBS is betting on it, and — for once — the odds seem pretty good.
