Tracker has lost three regulars in three seasons, and Mel is promoted to fill the gap
Tracker’s fourth run gets another rejig, with CBS locking in another full-time player — a choice that telegraphs where this procedural wants to spend its screen time.
If you’ve been following Tracker, you’ll know the show can’t seem to sit still when it comes to its supporting cast. Now, with Season 4 fast approaching, we’ve got another roster shake-up worth your attention: Cassady McClincy Zhang is moving up the ranks to join as a full series regular.
McClincy Zhang has been bumped up to lead cast after fifteen episodes playing ambitious assistant Mel, marking another notable shift in Colter Shaw’s inner circle.
Who’s In, Who’s Out?
Zhang’s promotion has been on the cards for a while, if you’ve been watching closely. She’s played Melanie (Mel) Day since Season 3, initially brought in as Reenie Greene’s determined assistant, and soon after thrown straight into the deep end of Colter Shaw’s high-stakes investigations. It’s the sort of part where, before you know it, she’s chasing missing-persons leads like she’s been there for years.
But Mel’s also prodding at her boss’s personal life, nudging Reenie to actually step outside the office for a change – not a minor subplot, considering that lingering awkwardness in the air between Reenie and Colter. With fifteen episodes already under her belt, Zhang’s presence is hardly a shock, but the decision is a clear sign of where the writers want to put their energy.
One more full-time cast member is now confirmed for Tracker Season 4.
She’ll now appear alongside Justin Hartley (Colter), Fiona Rene (Reenie), and Chris Lee (Randy) in the main line-up. Lee himself only clinched his series regular status back in March. All this comes after a revolving door of departures: Robin Weigert’s Teddi bowed out at the end of Season 1, while Abby McEnany and Eric Graise (Velma and Bobby) closed out their stories at the end of Season 2. The show’s clearly still rebuilding the team around its lead.

Zhang’s not just a newcomer thrown to the wolves. She spent a few years as a series regular on The Walking Dead, showed up on Castle Rock and Chicago Med, and backed up her TV work with films like Do Revenge and Love, Simon. If you’re looking out for her in cinemas, she’s attached to three upcoming features: And Out Comes the Wolf, The Snare, and May and the Woodsman.
Back in the world of Tracker, the story’s roots remain in Jeffery Deaver’s novel The Never Game. Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw operates as a freelance survivalist searching for missing people, all while wrestling with a tangle of family trauma. Season 3 closed with Colter getting dragged right up against some painful family truths, and it sounds like Season 4 plans to put him properly on the spot – this time, officially not going it alone.
