HBO has finally said what’s in store for The Last of Us on HBO Max once its highly anticipated third season wraps.

If you were hoping The Last of Us would stick around on TV forever, time to brace yourself. News out of HBO’s post-Emmys bash—yes, these things are where the real facts tend to emerge—has put a fairly clear expiry date on the series.

Casey Bloys, who runs the shop at HBO and Max Content, gave Deadline a quick state-of-the-union chat about where things stand with the apocalyptic series (among other projects). The headline: there’s a release target for Season 3, and more importantly, it’s looking like that’ll be the show’s farewell outing.

The Last of Us is eyeing a return in 2027 for Season 3, which is set to be its last.

No exact day or even a firm month to circle in your calendar, but 2027 is what they’re aiming for, so don’t hold out for a surprise launch any sooner. It’ll be the final season by design—that part’s down to showrunner Craig Mazin, who, according to Bloys, is wrapping things up after this next chapter. That puts the series’ full run at about four years on HBO Max, start to finish.

If you’re a veteran of the game adaptation or just like seeing how Hollywood likes to tie up big, expensive bows on its prestige projects, it seems The Last of Us will go out on purpose, not as a casualty of ratings apocalypse. Now let’s see if they can actually stick that landing in 2027.
