Bowen Yang’s unexpected mid-season departure from Saturday Night Live saw the beloved comedian deliver a moving final performance, complete with heartfelt words and a memorable musical send-off.

Bowen Yang’s time on Saturday Night Live came to a poignant close during a festive episode that left audiences both surprised and moved. The news of Yang’s mid-season departure was announced on 19 December, with his last appearance scheduled for the following day. Having become a central figure on the programme in recent years, his exit marked the end of an era for the late-night institution.

Yang’s Reflections and Social Media Farewell

Shortly after the announcement, Yang addressed his departure on social media, sharing his gratitude for the experience and the people he worked alongside.

“I loved working at SNL, and most of all, I loved the people. I was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 Rock [sic] taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile.”

His words resonated with fans, highlighting the sense of community and purpose he found during his tenure.

A Festive Send-Off with Familiar Faces

The Christmas special, hosted by Ariana Grande—Yang’s co-star from Wicked—was packed with seasonal sketches and a musical performance by Cher. Yang’s final sketch saw him portraying an airport worker on his last shift, preparing to say goodbye through a blend of song and dialogue. Grande appeared as his on-screen wife, Rhonda, eager for him to return home for the holidays.

In a bittersweet exchange, Yang’s character mused about the things he would miss, from the unique scent of the terminal to the parade of celebrities passing through. Grande’s Rhonda playfully praised his years of eggnog-making, quipping,

“Some of it was great, some of it was rotten.”

Yang replied with a wry smile,

“And a lot of it got cut!”

The sketch’s gentle humour and warmth captured the spirit of the occasion.

Heartfelt Goodbyes and a Touch of Wit

As the scene unfolded, Grande’s character expressed surprise at his decision to retire, prompting Yang to admit,

“I just wanted to go out on top.”

Grande responded with a cheeky retort,

“Oh, everyone knows you’re a bottom, honey.”

The pair embraced, and Yang, visibly emotional, shared,

“Oh, Rhonda, I should have come home earlier. I just feel so lucky I ever got to work here. And I just wanted to enjoy it for a little bit longer. Especially the people; I’ve loved every single person who worked here, because they’ve done so much for me, especially my boss.”

The sketch took a final turn when Cher appeared as the CEO of the eggnog company. When Yang asked for her thoughts on his years of service, she ended on a light-hearted note:

“Everyone thought you were a little bit too gay.”

The cast then joined together for a touching rendition of ‘Bells Will Be Ringing (Please Come Home for Christmas)’, bringing Yang’s chapter on the show to a close with both laughter and song.
