Blue Bloods fans won’t be waiting long — the spinoff’s Season 2 is right around the corner.

If you’ve got even a passing interest in American telly, you probably know Blue Bloods. That police family drama with Tom Selleck’s moustache, endless Sunday dinners, and more moral dilemmas than you can shake a nightstick at. Four generations of Reagans, nearly three hundred episodes, and a die-hard audience who looked like they’d riot if CBS ever actually pulled the plug. Well, they did end it, but no tearful goodbyes required—CBS immediately rolled out Boston Blue, a spin-off with plenty of familiar DNA.

The Same Recipe, New City

Boston Blue pretty much picked up the baton from Blue Bloods, swapping New York grit for Boston accents. Like its predecessor, it’s a case-of-the-week procedural, but with just as much attention on the drama simmering at the kitchen table. The Silvers are the new family of cops, but the Reagans still make appearances, and the pilot wastes no time reminding you they’re all in the same universe.

Season One Recap (and That Cliffhanger)

Season 1 didn’t spend any time faffing about. Sonequa Martin-Green leads as Detective Lena Silver, who spent most of the series patching up both her old wounds and her relationship with Detective Brian Rodgers. The two finally got on the same page after Lena nearly copped it in a shooting, and Brian made a big gesture—he turned down a swanky DEA post in D.C. to stay with her.

Of course, no one’s allowed a happily ever after in this universe. Season 1 ends with Brian getting ambushed—his fate left hanging in the balance, which is about as subtle as a flashing neon 'Wait for season 2' sign.

Packed Cast, Proper Drama

  • Donnie Wahlberg (Danny Reagan): The link between both shows, now moved to Boston to mend fences with his son Sean (Mika Amonsen), adding another generation to the family cop lineage.
  • Sonequa Martin-Green (Lena Silver): Boston detective carrying a fair bit more emotional baggage than most TV cops.
  • Family drama: Just like Blue Bloods, the extended Silvers are at the heart of things, with generations at the table.
  • Surprise visits: Blue Bloods alumni do pop by—Len Cariou’s Henry Reagan already made an appearance, and fans are dead keen for Tom Selleck’s Frank to swing by too.

How Boston Blue Came To Exist

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes oddity: co-creator Brandon Sommer says they first pitched a totally separate show—supposedly about some Los Angeles cop moving to Boston to reconnect with his estranged son. CBS, perhaps missing Blue Bloods as much as viewers, took the idea straight to Jerry Bruckheimer’s TV outfit. Their workaround? Ditch the LA bit and make it Danny Reagan making the move instead, straight from NYPD to Beantown.

So, you end up with a direct link: Danny Reagan, with fifteen years on the NYPD clock, restarts his life with his Boston police family doppelgangers, the Silvers, becoming the thematic bridge for fans who weren’t quite ready to give up their regular family meal of drama, ethics, and bad blokes caught weekly.

What’s Next for Boston Blue

For those desperate to know if Brian survived that ambush and who the mystery truck driver was, the wait is nearly over—season 2 is now officially in sight, premiering 9 October. And from the new teaser, it looks like Lena’s got even more trouble to wade through, not least the fallout from last season’s big corruption conspiracy.

'The wait for Season 2 will soon be over,' confirmed Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green.

Fans are also hoping for more Reagan cameos—especially since we got the patriarch Henry last time, and let’s be honest, Tom Selleck is never unwelcome.
