Michelle Yeoh reckons you don’t need to cram the earlier Blade Runner films before Blade Runner 2099 on Prime Video — and she has a simple reason.

If you've been putting off watching the original Blade Runner films for the last few decades (as, frankly, a lot of us probably have), Amazon's Blade Runner 2099 might finally let you off the hook. According to Michelle Yeoh herself, you won’t need to mug up on either the Ridley Scott classic or Denis Villeneuve’s 2049 sequel before you dive into this new series. Genuinely quite refreshing, that.

While speaking to Steve Weintraub from Collider, Michelle Yeoh explained: "I think the most interesting thing I’ve heard so far is that even if you’ve not watched the first two movies, because in this new generation, the younger audience might not have watched the first one, you would understand because of the way the story evolves. And I think the complication between the two characters, between Hunter (Schafer) and myself, it’s… Say no more (Laughs)."

In short, you can watch Blade Runner 2099 as a standalone. The story picks up fifty years after 2049, and focuses on two brand-new central characters. No Deckard, no Ryan Gosling popping up in a trench coat, just a fresh set of dilemmas with the faint hum of existential dread you’d expect in this universe.

What to Expect

So, what’s it actually about? The series centres on Cora (played by Hunter Schafer), a fugitive living on borrowed time who adopts one final new identity—as a Blade Runner, naturally. She ends up teaming up with Olwen (Yeoh), a Replicant who’s basically staring down her own expiry date. Together, they set off hunting for someone who’s hiding a potentially catastrophic secret—which, in typical Blade Runner style, probably means things are going to get a bit bleak, a bit philosophical, and possibly involve at least one monologue in the rain.

Alongside Yeoh and Schafer, the cast features Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Matthew Needham, and Johnny Harris. There’s also a full slate of recurring players: Katellyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi.

Behind the Scenes

Silka Luisa (from Shining Girls fame) is running the show as creator and showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken directs the first two episodes and also executive produces, and the legendary Ridley Scott is back—though just as an executive producer this time, not behind the camera. Alcon Entertainment is producing, just as they did with Blade Runner 2049.

Blade Runner 2099 lands on Prime Video worldwide on 25 November 2026, dropping all eight episodes across more than 240 countries simultaneously.

Expect a new take on moody sci-fi misery, now with a completely new ensemble and a setting that’s at least half a century removed from where the last films left off.
