Big bad incoming: Kristen Bell hints at a new Disney villain for Frozen 3
Kristen Bell has dropped a tantalising hint about Frozen 3’s villain—right as Disney’s D23 Expo rolled out a new trailer.
Frozen fans, time to clear your diary for 2027: the third big screen outing for Arendelle is very firmly in the works, and at the latest D23 Expo, Disney decided to throw us a fair chunk of new info. Granted, they kept a lot under wraps—plot specifics are still off-limits—but we did get a shiny new trailer, first-look designs, and a few intriguing titbits straight from the cast.
Frozen 3 has been officially announced for release in cinemas on 24 November 2027.
New faces, new villain
The headline this time is there's a "dangerous new villain" stepping onto the icy stage. No proper details on what sort of baddie we're talking about, but Kristen Bell (aka Anna herself) is happy just to have something to tease now the sisters’ issues are, in her words, "on lock." At D23, Bell explained the ongoing challenge for the story is shaking up that family dynamic, particularly when some outside threat turns up gunning for it. Here’s how she teased it directly, speaking to Entertainment Weekly:
“Well, that is one of the exciting things to share. The story has always been about these two sisters and their interpersonal relationship. And now that that’s on lock, um families grow, they evolve, and they change and their dynamics change, particularly when something threatens that relationship.”
Idina Menzel—who, let’s remember, is still Elsa—couldn’t resist adding that things will properly "shake up" this time around. Exactly how, no one's telling, but they were both dancing around spoilers at the expo, referencing "carrots dangling" and all sorts of tempting new hints, even if they couldn't land on an actual word for the abundance of "easter eggs" hidden at the event. Cheers for the effort, though.
What about the plot?
The teaser screened at D23 opened on Anna and Kristoff's wedding, so expect at least some nuptials before anyone starts battling whatever new force is out there. Alongside all the princessy vibes, the expo showed off the cast’s new looks: Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf dolled up in fancy wedding gear, while Elsa and Anna get proper adventure-ready outfits. If you care about fashion, Elsa’s gone for sparkly bluish-purple, Anna’s opted for a sort of pink gown with florals—someone's thinking spring, clearly.
- Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad are all back, voicing Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf.
- The supporting cast was on hand at the expo to chat about Olaf—yes, the snowman—finally landing a love interest.
- The teaser also showed off a "dangerous new realm" outside Arendelle—so new locations are on the table.
Naturally, there’s a new song on the cards (with Menzel handling vocals), because at this point, it’s tradition. Disney also confirmed the story this time is spread across multiple films, with Frozen 4 already simmering in development. Collect ’em all, I suppose.
