Ben Affleck nearly appeared in Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar Barbie, but a scheduling clash with his own film Air changed everything. Michael Cera shared how he unexpectedly took Affleck’s place.

Ben Affleck’s career has seen its fair share of box office triumphs, though not all have been universally praised. His most lucrative outings have come courtesy of the DC Extended Universe, a franchise that, for many, failed to live up to expectations. Beyond those, his filmography includes a handful of Michael Bay blockbusters, a few questionable romantic comedies, and the infamous Daredevil. It’s clear he’s no stranger to divisive superhero fare, regardless of the studio behind it.

Had circumstances played out differently, Affleck’s highest-grossing project might have been an entirely different affair. He was originally lined up for a brief appearance in Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar sensation, set to feature in the memorable “Beach Fight” sequence—possibly as another version of Ken. However, his commitments as director on Air meant he had to decline the opportunity.

The Unexpected Replacement

This behind-the-scenes detail came to light thanks to Michael Cera, who portrays the lone ‘Allan’ in Barbieland. During a Q&A with the film’s cast and crew, Cera let slip the original plan, only to pause and ask,

“Am I allowed to say that?”

After receiving reassurance, he continued,

“I think Ben wanted to do it, but he was directing his movie.”

With Affleck unavailable, Cera was called upon to fill the gap.

“They’re like, ‘Okay, Ben’s out, something has to happen here. So you’re gonna fight them,’”

he explained.

“So I had to jump in with the stunt team. I had just gotten over Covid, and they had me training, and I almost died.”

Cameos and Notable Appearances

Had Affleck managed to take part, he would have joined a rather eclectic group. John Cena makes a fleeting appearance as the aquatic ‘Kenmaid’, having chosen to participate despite being advised against it. Rhea Perlman pops up as Ruth Handler, the creator of the original Barbie doll in 1959. Yet, perhaps the most memorable cameo belongs to Ann Roth, the distinguished costume designer and two-time Oscar winner, who shares a touching moment with Margot Robbie’s character at a bus stop. At 94, Roth remains a close friend of Gerwig and a legend in her own right.

Barbie vs Air: Awards Season

Despite its focus on trainers, Air emerged as one of 2023’s most acclaimed films, frequently going head-to-head with Barbie during awards season. Both were nominated for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ by the Writers Guild of America, though the accolade ultimately went to The Holdovers. At the Critics’ Choice Awards, Barbie triumphed over Air in the same category. Barbie secured eight Oscar nominations, while Air, unfortunately, did not fare as well.

Affleck’s absence from Barbie did little to dampen the film’s success. Whether his involvement would have elevated the project is open to debate. One can only imagine if he regrets missing out on what would have been his first billion-dollar film. Still, it’s hard to fault him—he was simply doing what he does best.
