As Pirates of the Caribbean 6 gathers momentum, franchise alum Brenton Thwaites is ready to climb back on deck — stoking fresh buzz over who will join the next voyage.

Let's talk about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 — or, well, whatever that next chapter might be called if it ever actually gets made. It's been a minute (the last movie drifted ashore nearly a decade ago), but the speculation machine is running full steam. And now Brenton Thwaites, who played Henry Turner in the most recent outing, is throwing his hat back in the ring — enthusiastically, and maybe a bit desperately.

So, here's what's happening:

Thwaites Wants Back In (In Any Way Possible)

At a panel at Calgary Expo (which Collider covered), Thwaites was asked the big question: would he come back for another go-round with the Black Pearl crew? The answer: absolutely. In fact, he barely waited for the question.

He was pretty blunt — maybe even self-deprecating about whether Disney and the producers would actually invite him back. Here's his line:

"Yeah, I hope I'm in it. I don't think I will be, but I'll work as a grip. I'll be behind the camera, holding a boom if I could."

So, he's not just politicking for a lead role — he'd apparently take any job. You usually don't get stars tossing around those kinds of jokes unless they genuinely want to be part of what they see as a major cultural juggernaut. Or unless they've given up hope entirely. Hard to say which here, honestly.

Remember Henry Turner?

Thwaites played Henry Turner, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. That movie brought in a whole new crop of young faces, clearly teeing up the franchise for some kind of next-generation handoff. Nearly ten years later, no one knows if any of those characters are actually coming back, but, yes, people are still asking. Fans still care. Studios still keep secrets.

The Johnny Depp Question (Again)

Of course, no Pirates update is complete without the obligatory "Will Johnny Depp return as Jack Sparrow?" speculation. The latest? Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked point-blank about rumors that a sixth movie was moving ahead without Depp. His response, which almost felt performative at this point:

"First of all, that's not true." And, "No, no, no. Johnny… if it's up to me, he'll be in it."

Could all be wishful thinking or carefully worded PR, or maybe Disney is still working out the details (and the gigantic paycheck). Either way, officially, no solid news, no casting notices, no vague posters with pirate ships. Just rumors and actors dropping hints at conventions.

Where Things Stand Now

  • No sixth film has actually been officially announced.
  • Thwaites is all-in for a return, even if he has to work behind the scenes.
  • Bruckheimer still publicly wants Depp involved, but nothing is concrete.
  • The fate of the young (would-be) next generation of pirate characters? Still up in the air.

So that's the state of the seven seas: lots of enthusiasm, lots of nostalgia, and (for now) zero forward momentum. Pirates fans, keep your compass handy — your guess is as good as mine about where the next movie (if it exists) will take us, or who'll even be steering the ship.
