Barbie 2 has four months to happen, or it's cancelled

There’s a bit of a cloud hanging over Barbie 2 at the moment, as Warner Bros. has come up against a rather sticky patch with the film’s creative team. Everyone’s talking about a sequel, but at this point, it’s all stalled out — and it’s not as simple as “Just write a script and shoot the thing,” either. Here’s why matters are a bit more complicated than you might expect if you’re keen to see Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling back in Dreamhouse pink.

The 4-Month Countdown

According to The New York Times, Warner Bros. bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have got just under four months to get a sequel officially under way — or they risk losing the rights tied to Greta Gerwig’s original. If new contracts aren’t signed with Gerwig, co-writer Noah Baumbach, Robbie, and Gosling by around December 2026, the project stalls out completely and the underlying rights revert right back to Mattel. At that point, Mattel could go off and reboot the whole shebang, chucking out Gerwig’s characters and story for something entirely new, and Warner Bros. would be out of the running with the current team.

Here’s the kicker: Gerwig and Baumbach do in fact have an idea lined up for Barbie 2 — but they’re not sharing anything until the paperwork’s inked. Absolutely nothing in active development without signatures. And since the original contracts didn’t tie anyone down for a second film (big oversight there), Warner Bros. now has to cut all-new deals with everyone involved, stars included.

Money, Cast, and the Next Steps

Another wrinkle in all this is the paycheque situation. Reports have it that Gosling is eyeing a tidy $20 million to come back as Ken, which I’ve got to say is fair enough considering the original film’s wallet-busting success. That first Barbie film, directed by Gerwig, co-written with Baumbach, saw Robbie as Barbie, Gosling as Ken, and a good chunk of the planet turning out to see it — racking up over $1.4 billion globally and taking the record as Warner Bros.’ biggest hit ever at the time. Naturally, everyone at the studio wants to strike gold again, but now they’ve got to pay for it.

• If a deal gets done before the deadline, Barbie 2 would move into pre-production, and if all goes swimmingly, filming could start late 2027.
• That would put a possible release in 2028 — assuming nobody drags their heels.
• If they miss the December 2026 cut-off, it’s curtains for this sequel iteration, and Mattel could kick off a totally new direction with different talent.

No shooting date, no official release window, just a bit of brinkmanship and an awful lot riding on some signatures. So, if you’re waiting for more Barbie (with the Gerwig touch and all the big names lured back), don’t hold your breath unless those contracts land soon.
