Avatar: The Last Airbender star picks the spin-off that should happen next

Netflix hasn’t even dropped the second season of its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender yet, but one of the show’s stars is already pitching his dream spin-off. And if you reckon the original series left a few loose ends, you’re not alone—this idea actually leans into one of the biggest.

Ian Ousley Wants a Zuko Spin-off—Yes, Really

Ian Ousley—who plays Sokka in Netflix’s adaptation—has come out with an idea that’s just as ambitious as it is specific. In a recent chat with Screen Rant, he said he’d love to see a series focused on Zuko, specifically covering the bit where Zuko hunts for his vanished mother.

Ousley’s pretty up for being involved himself (he’d stick around as Sokka, obviously). But even if there’s no Sokka cameo, he actually wants them to adapt that storyline in some form—he reckons it could even work as a sort of political thriller. Frankly, not the worst idea I’ve heard come out of Netflix-land.

The Comic Book Arc He’s Talking About

This isn’t just fan-fiction wishlisting, either. The arc Ousley has in mind comes straight from the official comics—specifically, the 2013 trilogy called The Search. For those who missed it: the story starts with Zuko and his less-than-sane sister Azula teaming up (already risky) to track down their mother, Ursa, who disappeared in the original animated series. Aang, Sokka, and Katara all get roped in, and the plot bounces between present-day drama and flashbacks that gradually fill in the gaps about Ursa’s fate.

Ousley’s Thoughts on The Search—and Beyond

Ousley’s been a fan from the start. He said he read the books as a kid and, by his own admission, didn’t really get what was going on at first—and to be fair, those comics went in directions not everyone saw coming. He didn’t love some of the changes to existing characters, but eventually came round to the whole thing.

He also pointed out that, canonically, Suki ends up as one of Zuko’s royal guards, which opens the door for the core group to reunite in a new context. The angle he finds most interesting? Watching them all try to fix the Fire Nation, steering it away from villainy and making it, in his words, 'just a normal nation'.

Will Netflix Actually Do It?

No word yet on whether Netflix is keen to carry on with any sort of Avatar spin-offs once the core series signs off after three seasons. (Quick update: Season 3’s already been filmed, but don’t expect a release date until after Season 2, which lands Thursday, 25 June, 2026.)
