Animator slams Paramount’s decision to keep The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender out of theaters.

Well, this is awkward—even for Hollywood. Paramount has a major Avatar animated film, 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender', lined up for a big streaming release. But instead of waiting for its official Paramount+ debut, the whole movie just leaked online months ahead of schedule. And if you think the folks who animated and produced it are thrilled, think again.

The Plan, Then the Leak

Here’s the rundown: 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender' is an animated follow-up to Nickelodeon's original hit. This time, Aang’s all grown up and, according to the (now slightly awkward) official synopsis, he's chasing down an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. Of course, it wouldn’t be an Avatar story without danger: get to the power before the bad guys do or risk losing everything.

Paramount originally wanted to send this movie out with a classic theatrical release. But at some point (the details are fuzzy—typical studio behavior), they ditched the theaters and decided to make it a Paramount+ exclusive, setting the release date for October 9. Cue the internet—over this past weekend, someone decided to leak the entire film, and it spread across social media faster than Appa after too much cactus juice.

Animators React—And They're Not Happy

Julia Schoel, one of the animators who spent literal years working on the project, vented her frustration on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter). If you think she was holding back, you’d be wrong. In a blunt post that quickly made the rounds, she basically called out both the leakers and Paramount’s choices:

'We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters, just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy. I don’t like seeing people use Paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+ but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.'

She followed up in the comments, making a point to distinguish between 'piracy' and a full-on, pre-release leak. In her words: leaking a film before it’s even out kneecaps any chance it has to build buzz or get a marketing push, and that damages its long-term reputation (and the reputations of the people who worked on it). Pirating after release, as far as Schoel is concerned, at least means the movie got its shot through official channels—even if you weren’t planning on subscribing.

A Leak That Hurts

Just for context, pre-release leaks aren’t unheard of in Hollywood. But in this case, it’s not only a high-profile, major studio title—it was leaked pretty far ahead of time and in a nearly finished form. And to no one’s surprise, Paramount is now scrambling to mop things up, DMCA-ing the internet and removing copies wherever they can.

Official word from the studio is pretty much radio silence right now, but unless something drastically changes, they’re still eyeing that October release.

The All-Star Voice Cast (Yep, It’s Stacked)

  • Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong
  • Jessica Matten as Katara
  • Román Zaragoza as Sokka
  • Steven Yeun as Zuko
  • Dee Bradley Baker as Momo

What Else Is Coming?

Paramount and Avatar Studios have a whole slate of Avatar projects up their sleeves. Aside from 'The Legend of Aang', there’s a new animated TV show—'Avatar: Seven Havens'—set for 2027. If you’re more of a live-action fan (and don't mind Netflix's approach), 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' season two hits on June 25.

So, yeah—if you’re an Avatar fan, the future’s busy. Paramount just didn’t plan on the leaks dropping first.
