Another Godzilla Minus movie? The director puts the odds at 50/50
If you're wondering about a third Godzilla Minus instalment, director Takashi Yamazaki has given the kind of answer that keeps hope alive.
If you're wondering what's next for the Godzilla Minus series, you're not the only one. Director Takashi Yamazaki has chimed in with a fairly honest update, and for once, it's not just vague studio speak. After the success of last time, everyone's been waiting to see if he'll try to cook up another round of kaiju chaos.
Sequel odds: flip a coin
Nothing is set in stone. When asked in a recent Hollywood Reporter chat if he's thinking about a third instalment—especially with the current film practically begging for more with that open ending—Yamazaki called it as he sees it: it's genuinely a toss-up whether the series continues or stops right here.
Takashi Yamazaki told The Hollywood Reporter, "I would say it's about fifty-fifty at this point. I'm quite satisfied and happy with the current ending we have. It entrusts the interpretation to the audience in terms of how they want to receive it and what they want to walk out of theaters with. That being said, if Godzilla Minus Zero is my last Godzilla film, that would make me a bit sad."
Godzilla Minus Zero landed in Japanese cinemas on 3 November 2026, with a US release queued up for 6 November. It's a direct sequel to the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One. For those keeping tabs, Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe are both back, stepping into the roles of Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi once again.
Godzilla Minus Zero debuts in North America on 6 November 2026.
Busy schedule for Yamazaki
Don't expect Yamazaki to jump straight into another Godzilla movie, even if Toho greenlights one tomorrow. According to the director, he's got a stack of projects to get through first. High on the list is Grandgear, a new sci-fi action flick, which actually marks his first go at an English-language feature.
- Grandgear will be produced by J.J. Abrams and Glen Zipper, with Yamazaki directing from his own original script.
- Plot? Still locked down. But if you caught any of the leaked CinemaCon footage in April 2026, you'll know it involves giant robots brawling in downtown streets. Very on-brand, honestly.
On top of that, Yamazaki's in collaboration with 20th Century Studios on a project called Nue. Bonus detail: Ridley Scott is attached as producer through Scott Free. That should raise a few eyebrows, maybe even some expectations.
