Dark Winds Drops Season 4 on Netflix — Here’s When
After months of waiting, Netflix has finally set a drop date for Dark Winds Season 4, the 100% Rotten Tomatoes AMC thriller. Expect the Navajo Tribal Police back on the case, unearthing eerie crimes while wrestling old scars.
If you’ve been biding your time, waiting for the next batch of crime drama to hit Netflix, there’s finally a date to circle in your calendar. AMC’s much-praised show Dark Winds—the one with all the bloody mysteries out in the Navajo Nation—has solidified when its fourth season lands on streaming.
Dark Winds Season 4 Is (Finally) Coming to Netflix
To get right into it: Season 4 of Dark Winds will drop on Netflix on Saturday, 4 July 2026. Yes, 2026. That’s a bit of a wait, but apparently that’s just how it goes with this series. The season has already aired in full on AMC and AMC+ (the finale went out on 5 April 2026), so if you’ve been tiptoeing around spoilers these past few months, good luck to you. At least the previous seasons—specifically the first three—are already sat on Netflix, so you can binge away while you wait for the new lot.
The Story, for Those Who Need a Refresher
The show’s based on the Leaphorn & Chee books by Tony Hillerman. In TV land, it was Vince Calandra who brought it to AMC, but from Season 2 onwards he made way for John Wirth. A bit of trivia for you: George R. R. Martin is an executive producer here—that’s right, the bloke behind Game of Thrones is involved.
Set back in the 1970s, Dark Winds sticks us in the shoes of three Navajo Tribal Police officers—Joe Leaphorn, Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee—as they get wrapped up in all sorts of grisly crimes and secrets that haunt the high desert. The job doesn’t exactly do wonders for their mental health, but it does keep things interesting for viewers.
Who’s Who
- Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn
- Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee
- Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito
- Deanna Allison
- Betty Ann Tsosie
- ...plus a rotating cast of suspects and bad guys
How the Books Came Into It
If you’re a fan of the novels, you’ll notice the show’s approach is a bit of a mash-up:
- Season 1: Mainly Hillerman’s ‘Listening Woman’ (that’s book three), but they piped in a good bit from ‘People of Darkness’ (book four), which continues into Season 2
- Season 3: Jumped to ‘Dance Hall of the Dead’ (book two) and pulled in bits from ‘The Sinister Pig’ (book sixteen, a slightly more recent one)
- Season 4: Focused on ‘The Ghostway’
Critical Reception: Critics Love It, Viewers... Mostly Do
AMC’s been chuffed with how the show’s gone over with reviewers. It sits on a pristine 100% critic score at Rotten Tomatoes, which is rare air—although the user rating there is more reserved at 75%. Over at IMDb, it’s currently running at 7.7/10, based on over 30,000 ratings. That’s not quite the 'Best TV ever' zone, but it’s definitely above average.
Future Plans and Production Bits
If you’re already pondering what comes after Season 4, AMC have confirmed they’re not done yet: Dark Winds has been given a green light for Season 5. This next round is set to have eight episodes and, perhaps unsurprisingly at this point, they’ll be shooting it down in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
