Here comes a bit of House of the Dragon drama straight from behind the scenes, and it's juicier than the usual sword-swinging.

Gayle Rankin, who plays Alys Rivers, has been spilling all sorts about what really went down in that latest episode—especially when Alicent Hightower turned up at Harrenhal and upended everything Alys thought she understood about Aemond Targaryen.

A Mother’s Leverage

Rankin was candid about how Alys clocks just how much of a hold Alicent has over her son. When Alicent sweeps into Harrenhal, Alys can suddenly see the strings: Aemond, ‘dragon prince’ and all that, is still dancing to mum’s tune. That glimpse of vulnerability is all the more glaring because, up until Alicent’s arrival, Alys probably fancied herself the savvy player, able to mould Aemond to her own designs.

Speaking with TVLine, Rankin explained that Alys’s epiphany is about 'the power that his mother has over him.' This awareness gives Alys fresh ammunition—she might just be able to use this knowledge, if she’s clever enough about it.

Rankin pointed out that Alys already has, in her view, a 'strong maternal instinct'—but seeing Alicent in action around Aemond takes that up a notch. Suddenly, Alys is weighing up whether her entire strategy with Aemond is worth the effort. The relationship has shifted: what looked promising is feeling rather shaky.

Next Moves and Doubts

Faced with this new insight, Rankin said Alys is at a crossroads—time to decide if she’s properly in the game, or if it’s all just a waste. The way she puts it is rather blunt, but honest. According to Rankin, Alys is genuinely concerned that Aemond may not have the capacity to grow or change, and she’s starting to see a pattern with all these Targaryen blokes. Are none of them able to break free of family drama?

As Rankin summed up: 'The truth is, the man's not going to change, you know?' She even said Alys is looking at Aemond after all this and asking herself: 'Are they all just the same?'

That disillusionment hits its peak in Alys’s tart one-word sendoff near episode’s end, when she mutters simply, 'Idiot,' after witnessing Aemond grovel under his mother’s gaze. Rankin compared this to Alys’s earlier time with Daemon Targaryen, noting that with Aemond, Alys actually hoped he ‘might be willing to give me more, ultimately’. But now, with Alicent’s sway laid bare, any confidence in that potential seems properly rattled. Alys must decide if she’s still betting on Aemond—or if she’s backing the wrong dragon altogether.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 8 lands next Sunday on HBO, and Max for the streamers.
