Adam Driver will be the bad guy in his next role — but which project’s getting his darker side?

Adam Driver doesn’t exactly shy away from a filmmaker with vision, does he? If there’s an auteur with a big idea or a role that pushes him somewhere uncomfortably intense, Driver’s probably reading the script in his kitchen right now. He can do tortured leading men, the strangest of side characters, or just go full son-of-Satan when the mood takes him – see Star Wars or his turn as a thuggish knight. Now he’s eyeing up what looks set to be his nastiest part yet, and – fair warning – it’s going to get gnarly.

A Heat Sequel, But Also a Prequel

So, Michael Mann is actually making Heat 2. Properly. The first one’s near-mythic in crime film circles, if you didn’t know – big, clever gunfights, cops with principles, criminals with codes. Mann’s follow-up, adapted from his own novel, does double duty as a prequel and a sequel, jumping across two timelines to flesh out both backstories and aftermath. First whispers about Driver’s involvement started doing the rounds back in 2023, but things stayed hush-hush until his co-star, Stephen Graham, let slip last September.

Now Driver’s finally said it straight, while chatting to The Rich Eisen Show of all places: he’s officially on board, and playing the main villain this time round. Not just any street-level psycho either – this is Otis Wardell: the sort of chilling, methodical gang leader who quietly ruins a city’s sense of safety for good. The films swings between two decades, and Driver’s Otis lurks at the core of both sets of chaos. If you thought Kylo Ren was all brooding and terrifying, this one's apparently a proper sociopath leading squads of home invasion artists.

I play Otis Wardell. I think I can say that. Well, I'll find out. I'll find out pretty soon.

Driver seemed unsure if he was even supposed to admit it, but the cat’s well and truly out. Fast-forward, and he’s got Mann personally walking him through the Heat 2 Los Angeles locations. That’s prep you don’t get on just any gig.

Cast, Scope, and All the Big Numbers

What’s more, the cast is wild. Alongside Driver and Graham, there’s Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio (no word yet on who’s playing what, though the rumour mill’s running riot). This is only Driver’s second go-round with Mann after Ferrari in 2023, but you get the impression this one’s Mann swinging for the fences. According to Driver, the script is absolutely stripped for action. Here’s how he described it on The Rich Eisen Show:

It's good. It's a book. And I say, as a script, it's even more condensed and streamlined. It's a missile. The script.

Pre-production has already kicked off, with a bigger push planned for December, before filming gets started next year. They’re not stinting on locations: Chicago, Los Angeles, Paraguay, and Singapore are all on the shooting itinerary. Mann himself explained why the project needed serious backing, after Warner Bros bailed – those city-hopping, globe-trotting set pieces don’t come cheap.

As Mann put it to a separate outlet, the budget’s up there mainly because the ambitions are massive, not because anyone’s demanding a mansion. That’s why Amazon and United Artists have stepped in, and why the film’s getting a huge theatrical release Stateside: 4,000 cinemas and at least a 45-day window before streaming comes sniffing.

$165 million is the projected budget for Heat 2.

For a sense of just how bonkers it’s getting: the gunfight sequences, already legendary from the first Heat (the Val Kilmer shootout in particular), are apparently about to be topped. Action set-pieces on a bigger scale entirely, with insiders hinting the script doesn’t hold back on mayhem. Reports say there’s already talk of a third outing on the horizon, which boggles the mind when you recall how self-contained the original felt.

  • Adam Driver as Otis Wardell (main villain)
  • Christian Bale (role under wraps)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (role also undisclosed)
  • Stephen Graham (cast announced early)
