House of the Dragon season 3 trails season 2 in viewers
There’s good news for HBO even as House of the Dragon Season 3 runs a shade behind Season 2’s audience.
So, House of the Dragon is back at it with Season 3, and the numbers game is both a bit of a worry and a win for HBO. The prequel juggernaut is still pulling in massive crowds, just maybe not quite at the fever pitch of last year. That said, there was a pleasant surprise right at the end that execs will be clinging to as they gear up for the big finish in Season 4.
The Numbers Game
The big headline: Season 3 kicked off on 21 June 2026 over on HBO Max. From the get-go, it was clear the viewership wasn’t hitting exactly the same heights as Season 2. The average sat at roughly 34 million viewers per episode across both HBO and Max, according to Variety. That’s just a fraction under last year’s 35 million average, so it’s hardly disastrous, and frankly, most series would sell their dragons for those numbers. But if you’re HBO, you do start glancing nervously at the graphs.

What’s got the suits smiling, though, is how things ended. The Season 3 finale, dropping on 9 August 2026, actually brought in the highest numbers all season. Bit of a slow burn, sure, but you’d rather finish strong than fizzle out halfway. For the stats fans: despite the slight dip, Season 3 still lands among HBO’s three most-watched returning series seasons in the network’s entire run. It’s all relative in dragon-land.
The Bloody Finale
The last episode, fittingly titled “The Treasons at Tumbleton”, was exactly what it said on the tin. Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) got her hands dirty going toe-to-toe with Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) in a string of brutal power plays for political dominance. The battle wasn’t without casualties — both lead characters pulled absolutely no punches, and several familiar faces didn’t make it out the other side.

Looking Ahead to the Endgame
With Season 3 wrapped up, all eyes are now on the forthcoming final season. HBO Chief Casey Bloys spoke to Deadline about where things are heading. Here’s his take on bracing for the endgame — and he’s not exactly mincing words about the roadmap:
“The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens.”
