A new update reveals Sam Neill’s difficult final weeks
Fresh details are emerging about Jurassic Park star Sam Neill’s death, with new reports revealing he had been quietly battling cancer for years.
Right, this one's tragic and, frankly, quite moving. Sam Neill – everyone's favourite paleontologist-turned-raptor-wrangler from Jurassic Park – has passed away, and as more details come to light, it's clear just how tough his final stretch really was. Let's break down what we've learned about the last weeks of Sam's life, thanks to friends, family, and a handful of industry legends who lined up to pay tribute.
Neill's Health Battle: Not Exactly a Walk in the Park
So, as was public knowledge, Neill had been battling blood cancer on and off for the past several years. But, as it turns out, the specifics were a bit more gruelling than most fans realised. Laura Tingle, who was once partnered with Neill and is well-known down under as a journalist, gave a fairly candid account during a Sydney radio appearance.
'He'd been fighting various forms of cancer for at least the last five years intensively,' Tingle explained. 'He'd had a lot of chemo and immunotherapy, and thankfully it had finally cleared him of the blood cancer. But it left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system... He's been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks and everyone who loved him has been willing him on, from near and far. But I think it was just a bit too much to recover from one more time.'
That really sums it up: won the battle against blood cancer, but the war on his immune system left him vulnerable. In the final stretch, he wasn't dealing with the cancer anymore, but his body essentially ran out of steam after everything it'd endured.
Pneumonia: The Final Blow
Rima Te Wiata, who starred alongside Neill in Hunt for the Wilderpeople, added another piece to the picture. She revealed that, on top of everything else, Neill came down with pneumonia near the end, which ultimately seems to have been the tipping point. According to his family, his death was "sudden and unexpected", which – if you've seen how battle-weary his health was in these final weeks – is heartbreaking in its own right. His family have said they'll share further details in due course.
Tributes from Across the Industry
Predictably, tributes have poured in from Hollywood and beyond, with quite a few familiar faces stepping forward:
- Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, Neill's Jurassic Park co-stars, both posted heartfelt messages. Dern in particular focused on his deep kindness and humanitarian streak.
- Steven Spielberg, who of course directed Neill in Jurassic Park, went out of his way to praise both Neill's work ethic and his character off-camera.
- Cillian Murphy, lately of Peaky Blinders, called Neill 'one of the finest actors' he'd ever had the pleasure of working with.
- Nicole Kidman, who crossed paths with Neill many times over the decades, called him "a joy to be around" in her own tribute.
All in all, Neill's last days seem to have been a tough fight, but he was clear of cancer at the end. It's just that years of treatment had left him pretty frail, and pneumonia was the last straw. As ever, the industry's outpouring of respect reminds you how much he was loved both on set and off.
