Decades on, this action-thriller classic still hits like a freight train—lean, relentless, and cooler than most of what’s new. The bar it set hasn’t budged.

If you think the appetite for 80s action movies might have waned in 2026, think again. Sylvester Stallone's First Blood – yes, the kicking-off point for the entire Rambo circus – is now shooting up the streaming charts all over again. Four decades on and it's still working its fight-or-flight magic on a whole new generation, apparently. Try to keep up.

Rambo: Not Your Standard 80s Carnage

Before he became the poster boy for explosive carnage and improbable bandana-based survival, John Rambo first shuffled onto our screens in 1982 thanks to Stallone, fresh from his initial Rocky triumph. But here's the plot twist: First Blood is about as different from the later, grenade-launcher-heavy Rambo outings as you can get while still technically having Stallone snarl at people.

Directed by Ted Kotcheff and adapted from David Morrell's 1972 novel, the film drops us in a small American town that's not exactly in the business of welcoming Vietnam vets. What follows is less 'machine-gun mowing down baddies' and more a sharp, abrasive critique of how America treated its returning soldiers – with a hell of a lot of PTSD on show. Rambo is a haunted, tragic figure here, not just an invincible tank top with legs. Forced into violence by some truly dim-witted local cops, he ends up on a rural rampage that has more in common with a thriller than any of its gun-fetish sequels.

The critics and audiences actually agree for once. As it stands, First Blood is sitting at an apparently unmovable 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, both for critics and viewers. A lot of the write-ups go way beyond 'decent action flick'. One five-star review gets right to the point:

'When I first saw this film on its original release, I thought it was a great action movie. On rewatching I see a thoughtful study about PTSD and prejudice.'

And that's genuinely the appeal – there's proper substance under all the mud and mullets.

Where To Watch It (and What Happens Next)

First Blood is now surging in popularity across half the globe on Canal+ in the UK, and trending in spots like Ireland, Greece, Argentina, Singapore, Algeria, and more, bouncing between Starz, Apple TV, and assorted platforms. Those in the US have it on AMC+ – but only for the next 14 days, so there is a clock on your nostalgia trip.

After that first outing, the franchise kind of lost the plot in terms of subtlety, but you can still see the DNA of Rambo in every ripped hero running pointlessly across a forest. The last chapter (for now) was 2019's Rambo: Last Blood, where everything more or less wraps up for Stallone's battered vet.

The Rambo Prequel: Here's Who's Playing Young John

In a move that would have seemed genuinely bizarre back when the original came out, there's now a Rambo prequel on the horizon. It's called John Rambo, naturally, with Noah Centineo – yes, the bloke from The Recruit and Street Fighter – stepping into Stallone's army boots. The film will be directed by Jalmari Helander, who did Sisu. That one lands 4 June 2027 and comes from Lionsgate Films.
