Will Smith is developing a scripted TV series about a hip-hop origin story — and the duo in question isn’t exactly obscure.

Will Smith's career path has always been one for the textbooks, kicking off as one half of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince before he cleaned up at the box office with action blockbusters. But before all the Hollywood glitz, there was West Philadelphia, and now Smith is heading right back to those roots in a new TV project called 215. If you think you've seen every possible twist on his origin story, this one’s actually flipping the formula and heading even further back—pre-Bel-Air, pre-Hollywood, back to the real hustle in Philly’s hip hop scene.

‘215 is especially meaningful to us because it draws from the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and celebrates Philadelphia during such a defining era in the city’s late-’80s/early-’90s hip-hop scene. The Malar Group shares our approach to storytelling, and this partnership gives us the opportunity to build a slate together with intention, beginning with a project rooted in friendship, ambition and the integrity of this specific time and place.’

That’s Terence Carter, President of Television at Smith’s Westbrook Studios, talking about the show’s proper old-school focus and their new alliance with The Malar Group — this is actually the first series out of a fresh production deal between the two.

The Story: Before He Became Prince

So, it’s not another Fresh Prince of Bel-Air rerun, nor a retread of Bel-Air’s ‘gritty reboot' vibe. Instead, 215 takes us back to the duo’s early days, right at ground zero of their music hustle. The series follows a smart-mouthed teenage rapper (if you can guess who that’s meant to be), his DJ partner in crime, and their mates, as they chase a record deal, chase the cash, and try to break away from their everyday lives in Philadelphia’s late ‘80s hip hop world. It’s all label meetings, shaky loyalties, sudden fame, and the friendships that either anchor them or fall apart—they’re aiming for proper authenticity about the scene that sent Smith and Jazzy Jeff global.

  • 215 is the third scripted TV series drawn from Will Smith’s life—joining the original NBC comedy The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996), and the dramatic modern reboot Bel-Air, which ran on Peacock from 2022 and wrapped up in late 2025.

Of course, the original Fresh Prince sitcom pulled Smith’s real-life best mate DJ Jazzy Jeff into the cast as 'Jazz', but that show was all audience laughter and bright jumpers. Fast forward a few decades and Bel-Air reimagined the story for a new era, scrapping the gags in favour of dramatic grit and digging into the sharp culture shock from Philly to proper Bel-Air money. Now, with 215, it’s all about the chapters before fame—what actually happened with these two before American stardom clicked in.

The actual casting and release window? Completely locked down for now—no word on who's playing the lead, or when any of us will get to see it. The studio is keeping things properly secret, but this will apparently be the anchor for more film and TV collaborations between Westbrook and Malar. And over on the big screen, Smith’s still charging ahead—he’ll be starring in Supermax, a prison thriller from Amazon MGM Studios next.

‘215 caught our attention immediately. It’s the untold origin story of a show that audiences around the world have connected with for decades, but at its heart, it’s about two people who believed in each other, overcame extraordinary odds and built something that endured. 215 marks the start of a broader collaboration with Westbrook Studios, and we look forward to this project and the stories still to come.’
