The MCU’s upcoming X-Men reboot may have its mutants sorted, but with Magneto still uncast, fans are backing a choice that could prove controversial.

Right, so Marvel marched out their big X-Men reboot cast at D23, getting everyone hyped about which mutants will headline the next phase of the MCU. But there’s a glaring omission in the official line-up—no Magneto. It’s a bit of an eyebrow-raiser, as he’s essentially the X-Men’s Darth Vader, and not having him front and centre is odd, to say the least. Of course, that’s just spurred the internet to do what it does best: speculate wildly about who’s got the gig, with a real fan favourite emerging—and a controversy baked right in.

Lee Pace has reportedly been cast as Magneto in the MCU's X-Men reboot, though Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

The Internet’s Top Pick

So who do fans (and, apparently, ‘industry sources’) think is sliding on Magneto’s infamous helmet next? It’s Lee Pace, known for his work in Foundation and the Lord of the Rings films. Journalist Jed Fontaine claimed on social media that multiple reliable people behind the scenes have told him Pace has actually been cast. This wasn’t announced at D23—Marvel kept that card close to the chest—but the rumour exploded anyway. Pace’s name has come up before, with loads of people pointing to his very solid, ‘could-stare-down-a-train’ presence on screen and the sort of gravitas that Magneto demands. If you saw his turn as Brother Day in Foundation, you’ll get why fans think he’s got the goods: ruthless, charismatic, commanding—the works.

The Potential Problem

Now, here’s where things get messy. Pace actually already did time in the MCU, playing Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel. So if Marvel do hand him Magneto, it’ll ruffle feathers amongst viewers who prefer their universe a little more continuity-friendly. Still, Marvel isn’t shy about recycling actors. Case in point: Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly getting slotted in to play Doctor Doom in the next Avengers outing, despite being synonymous with Iron Man for over a decade. Clearly, the studio’s okay letting familiar faces hop to different, even iconic, roles—regardless of potential confusion. That’ll probably split fans down the middle: some fine with it, some not keen at all.

Who’s In and Who’s Missing

The rest of the X-Men cast announcement gives Marvel plenty of room for late bombshells. At this point, the official roster includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Christopher Abbott as Professor X. Still, a handful of headline names are voluntary no-shows: no word yet on who’s playing Beast, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Iceman, or Gambit. Basically, Marvel are holding back a few of the biggest surprises for closer to the film’s actual release.

  • Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
  • Kit Connor as Cyclops
  • Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
  • Inde Navarrette as Rogue
  • Christopher Abbott as Professor X
  • Magneto, Wolverine, Beast, Nightcrawler, Iceman, and Gambit still under wraps

If nothing else, it’s a proper rollout strategy designed to keep everyone guessing until the final moment. The X-Men reboot itself is aimed at a 2028 release window, so expect plenty more tea to spill before anyone in a cape shows up on screen.

The new X-Men film is targeting cinemas in 2028, with several key characters yet to be revealed.
