Worried Roy Kent’s Season 4 finale exit is permanent, Ted Lasso co-creator Brendan Hunt has weighed in on what it means for Brett Goldstein’s future on the show.

Ted Lasso fans who nearly choked on their tea after that Season 4 finale might want to take a breath—things may not be quite as dire for Roy Kent as they appeared. There’s been plenty of chatter swirling about Brett Goldstein legging it from the show after that big send-off, but is he actually out the door? Well, it’s complicated, but not as final as you’d think.

Roy’s Departure: What Really Happened

The last episode of Ted Lasso’s fourth series really gave Richmond’s coaching staff a shake-up. Roy Kent—formerly the grumpiest man in football—said cheers to his managerial gig at Richmond and accepted the top job at Chelsea. His exit wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment thing; it came after the news of Keeley’s pregnancy and a classic Diamond Dogs confab for advice. It properly felt like a farewell, but is it?

Brendan Hunt Breaks It Down

Co-creator Brendan Hunt spoke to Deadline and cleared up what Roy’s move could really mean for Goldstein’s future on Ted Lasso. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves—Roy vanishing from the storyline doesn’t mean Goldstein is binning the show altogether. Here’s Hunt’s take on the situation during that interview:

“No, not necessarily. It is acknowledging that he’s a busy man and giving us some wiggle room I would say,” Hunt told Deadline.

He also added that there’s “no expectation of losing Roy and Keeley,” though he did flag that both Goldstein and Juno Temple (Keeley) have got jammed diaries at the moment. Goldstein, for one, is already juggling lead roles in Amazon’s Escorted and Apple TV’s Shrinking, plus whatever films he’s got tucked up his sleeve.

When pressed about whether both actors could wind up not being series regulars, Hunt didn’t exactly throw us a life raft. Both the return of the cast and the shape of future episodes are up in the air:

“We have no idea. We don’t know if we’re coming back, and when we come back, we don’t know what’s going to be going on in their lives,” he said. He reiterated the importance of flexibility by repeating, “So yeah, the wiggle room.”

Where Things Stand for Series 5

Just to add another twist, Apple TV hasn’t officially ordered a fifth series yet. So at this point, everyone’s speculating. The finale itself had Roy wrestling with the Chelsea job until Rebecca gave him her blessing; Alice Chilton then got promoted to manage the women’s team, while Ted and Beard demoted themselves to assistant roles under her. For anyone hoping Goldstein sticks around, safe to say, don’t expect oodles of screen time—assuming the show even comes back. But for now, nothing’s set in stone.

Ted Lasso hasn’t yet been renewed for a fifth series.
