Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has just pulled off something that pretty much no one else in the spandex crowd can claim. With his latest Emmy nomination for playing Marvel’s Wonder Man, he’s now officially got acclaim from both Marvel and DC projects, which, if you’re keeping score, is not the sort of thing you see every day in superhero TV land.

Superhero Cross-Pollination: He’s Got Both Sides Covered

If you recognise the name, you probably remember Abdul-Mateen picking up that Emmy a few years back for his work in HBO’s Watchmen – specifically, tearing up the screen as Cal Abar, then (spoiler, if you’ve been living under a rock since 2019) revealing himself as Doctor Manhattan. That role, part of DC’s serious foray into prestige telly, bagged him Outstanding Supporting Actor at the 2020 Primetime Emmys – a tough category, and he won it.

Now he’s back, but this time repping Marvel with Wonder Man – and the Television Academy’s given him a nod for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. Which, by the way, means he’s gunning against people like Steve Carell, Matthew Rhys, Jason Segel, and Martin Short. You cannot accuse the Emmy panel of not mixing it up.
