Steve Burns hosted Blue's Clues on Nickelodeon from its 1996 debut until 2002, across roughly 100 episodes, and left with an on-screen explanation aimed squarely at three-year-olds: Steve was off to college. Donovan Patton took over as Joe, and the show ran until 2006. The actual reasons arrived in instalments over the next two decades.

Burns left at 29 because he was going bald and refused to host a preschool programme in a wig, and because he wanted to make music and act elsewhere. Twenty years later he added the part nobody knew at the time: he had severe clinical depression throughout his run.

Reason one: the hair

He said this out loud as early as the 2006 Nickelodeon special Behind the Clues: 10 Years with Blue — he wasn't going to lose his hair on a children's show, and it was happening quickly. He repeated the logic in a 2022 Variety profile, pointing out he was nearly 30 and had been occupying an odd older-brother space on the programme. Not boyish anymore, in his words, and unwilling to fake it.

Reason two: the one he saved

The same Variety profile, published two decades after his exit, contained the line that reframed everything:

"I was the happiest depressed person in North America," Burns told Variety in 2022.

His job, he explained, was to be full of joy and wonder for hours a day, every day, and years of drawing on that without replenishing it came at a cost.

What was the 2021 video, then?

That was the middle step — a short clip posted for the show's 25th anniversary in September 2021, in which Burns spoke straight down the lens to the adults who'd grown up watching him. He acknowledged the abrupt exit, said college had been hard but good, and pivoted to student loans and jobs and families. It went viral immediately. It was also, notably, still the college version of the story.

What he's doing now

  • Music — he released records after leaving, and his song "Mighty Little Man" became the Young Sheldon theme.
  • Blue's Clues & You! — he returned as Steve for the 2019 premiere, a December 2020 holiday episode, and the 2022 Paramount+ film Blue's Big City Adventure.
  • Alive with Steve Burns — a weekly podcast launched in 2025 covering death, sex, taxes, and adult life generally, which he told The New York Times he intended as a counterpoint to the current manosphere.

He never actually went to college in the story either. The character just walked out the door with a suitcase and never came back.
