Why did Rachel leave Suits? The writers knew a year before the rest of the world did
Meghan Markle joined Suits in 2011 as paralegal Rachel Zane and left at the end of season 7, married off to Mike Ross and dispatched to Seattle to run a law firm. The exit landed neatly — a wedding, a clean send-off, no loose ends.
That neatness wasn't luck. The writers' room had been building it for a season.
Creator Aaron Korsh worked out for himself that Markle's relationship with Prince Harry was likely to end her television career, and wrote Rachel an exit in advance rather than ask her about it. He never confirmed it with her. The engagement was announced on 27 November 2017; the season 7 finale, with Rachel and Mike's wedding, aired on 25 April 2018.
Korsh's version
He explained it on BBC Radio 4's Today programme in 2017, days after the engagement news.
"I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning," Korsh said.
Rather than put the question to Markle directly, he and the writers made a bet: that the relationship would hold, that she'd marry, and that she wouldn't be returning. He later told Variety that he'd made the call early in the season, reasoning that a woman marrying a prince was unlikely to stay on a USA Network legal drama.
Markle's Suits scripts reportedly had to clear extra approvals once the relationship became public, with pages routed via her agent to Kensington Palace — a claim made by biographer Tom Bower rather than by the production.
How Rachel was written out
- The engagement — Mike proposes at the end of season 6, giving the writers a runway.
- The wedding — Rachel and Mike marry in the season 7 finale, "Good-Bye", in April 2018.
- The relocation — the couple move to Seattle to start their own firm, a departure that requires no death, no recast, and no explanation if the actor ever wanted to come back.
- The insurance — Korsh has said he kept the door open in case the gamble didn't pay off.
Markle's real wedding followed on 19 May 2018, three and a half weeks after the episode aired.
Did she ever come back?
No. Patrick J. Adams returned as Mike Ross for the final season in 2019; Rachel was referred to but stayed off screen. When Suits LA premiered in 2025 on the back of the original's streaming resurgence, fans asked about a cameo. Korsh told NBC he'd be open to it in principle. Nothing has come of it.
