Who killed Tiana in Death in Paradise?
The murder of Tiana Palmer is one of the more emotionally charged cases in Death in Paradise's history — not just because of the crime itself, but because of the devastating chain of events it set off.
This was the Series 8 two-parter, "Beyond the Shining Sea" (episodes 5 and 6, broadcast February 2019).
Who was Tiana?
Tiana Palmer was a well-liked young woman living in the fishing village of Belle Mer. She worked at Patrice's bar and had been chosen as queen of the Mahi Mahi festival. She set off alone on a boat to make traditional offerings of bread and rum — and was found stabbed to death at sea, despite apparently being entirely on her own.
Who actually killed her?
The person who physically killed Tiana was Harrison Green, her own boyfriend. But Harrison wasn't acting of his own accord — at least, not entirely.
The real puppet master was Frances Compton (played by Saskia Reeves), a psychiatrist and business associate of a man called Ewan Boyd. The key revelation: Ewan was Tiana's biological father, something Tiana had only recently found out.
Frances had been promised half of Ewan's estate and a controlling share of his company upon his impending death. When she learnt that Ewan had a biological daughter — and might leave the lot to her instead — Frances took action. Drawing on her skills as a psychologist, she manipulated Harrison into committing the murder. She knew about his gambling addiction and the debts that had driven him to steal from Tiana, and she used that leverage to push him over the edge.
Why this case matters to the show
This two-parter had devastating consequences for the regular cast. Patrice, who was Harrison's best mate and DS Florence Cassell's fiancé, refused to believe Harrison was guilty and started poking around on his own. He arranged a meeting with someone connected to the case — and Frances shot him dead to protect her secret. Florence, who had followed Patrice to the meeting, was also shot and seriously wounded.
Patrice's death ultimately led to Florence leaving Saint Marie. It remains one of the most emotionally gutting storylines in the show's run.
