Who is Zoya's father in Star City? Irina erased the tape rather than let the answer be heard
Star City on Apple TV: everything episode 3 reveals about Irina Morozova's daughter Zoya, the question about her father Irina won't answer, and what the cast has hinted.
If you're watching Star City — Apple TV's paranoid Soviet-side companion to For All Mankind, where everyone is bugged, everyone is listening, and the borscht is presumably also wired — you have one question, and it isn't about the Moon. It's about Zoya.
Specifically: who is the father of Irina Morozova's daughter? Because in episode 3, the show waved that question in front of our faces and then set it on fire.
What actually happened
Irina (Agnes O'Casey, playing the younger version of For All Mankind's most quietly terrifying woman) is having a perfectly nice, perfectly bugged visit at Tanya's flat when the question of Zoya's dad comes up. Irina's entire answer, per the episode: he was "not a good man." Then she gets so rattled she leaves.
And then — this is the bit — she goes back to the surveillance office and magnetically erases that exact stretch of the tape. A KGB eavesdropper. Destroying KGB evidence. About herself. In 1969. That is not "I'd rather not discuss it at dinner" behaviour. That is "this information can get me killed" behaviour.
So who is he?
The show hasn't said. That's the honest answer, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. But the guessing is delicious, so:
- The leading fan theory holds that Zoya's father is someone recognisable and highly placed — KGB brass or Politburo-adjacent — because you don't risk your career wiping a tape over an ordinary deadbeat.
- The erasure suggests the secret is dangerous rather than shameful. Unwed motherhood already made Irina a pariah; she had nothing left to protect on that front.
- Whoever he is, "not a good man" from a woman this controlled is doing an enormous amount of lifting.
What the actress is telling us
O'Casey has been careful, but not that careful. Speaking to Collider about Irina's motherhood storyline, she said the writing around it is
"sort of like a bomb waiting to go off."
She also called the circumstances of the pregnancy "very difficult" and said this secret is paramount to who Irina becomes — which, if you've seen where this character ends up decades later, reads less like a tease and more like a threat.
The bottom line
Zoya's father remains officially unnamed. The tape is gone. The bomb is ticking. And given that this franchise turned an asteroid-mining subplot into appointment telly, I fully expect the reveal to ruin my week in the best way.
