Who is the mole in The Undeclared War? The show names them with most of the season still to run
The Undeclared War returned to Channel 4 on 21 July 2026, four years after series one and picking up two weeks after its cliffhanger. Six episodes, a new writer in Colin Teevan, a new director in Paul McGuigan, and a mole inside GCHQ. Most thrillers would ration that out until the finale.
The mole is Barbara Napier, played by Siân Brooke — a GCHQ analyst, formerly of MI5, and the wife of operations chief Danny Patrick (Simon Pegg). The series names her at the end of episode 2, with four of its six episodes still to run. Everything after that is about why she did it.
How the reveal lands
Charlie Francis (Danny Sapani), GCHQ's head of security and a childhood friend of both Danny and Barbara, is brought in for the express purpose of finding the mole, and is confident he's got them by the end of the second hour. Danny, meanwhile, has spent the run-up assuming his wife is having an affair. Pegg told Radio Times in 2026 that his character is poleaxed by the actual answer, and that learning the truth brings a strange sort of relief alongside the horror.
Why she did it
Barbara compromised her own service to protect Danny's career. The lever is Nicky Chan (Jason Tobin), an ex-boyfriend from an MI6 operation in Hong Kong in 2014 who reappears in her life in London in 2022, and episode 3 runs both timelines side by side.
What's left after the reveal
Channel 4's own episode synopses lay out where the remaining four hours go:
- Episode 3 — Barbara and Nicky, in Hong Kong in 2014 and London in 2022.
- Episode 4 — Danny grows alarmed by Barbara's behaviour as Chinese malware tears through government departments; Barbara tracks Nicky down.
- Episode 5 — Charlie turns his scrutiny on Barbara, tragedy hits GCHQ, and Danny makes a discovery.
- Episode 6 — Danny confronts his wife while the team works out what the malware has been searching for.
Wasn't season 1 about Russia?
It was. Series two establishes that China orchestrated the attack that Russian actors carried out, and moves the centre of the show from intern Saara Parvin to Danny's command. Mark Rylance and Adrian Lester, both in the 2022 run, don't return; Chloe Pirrie joins as Lt Colonel Roz Cavendish.
Critics were split — 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 3/5 from the Daily Telegraph's Anita Singh, whose verdict was that the series only clicks about halfway through, once the mole's backstory and motive arrive. Which is a reasonable argument for naming your mole in episode two. It reached Peacock in the US on 27 August 2026.
