Forty-one years of weddings, affairs, secret parentage, and DNA-test bombshells have left Albert Square with a family tree that looks more like a hedge. Here's the untangled version — who's actually related to who in EastEnders.
The Beales and Fowlers: the original family
EastEnders launched in 1985 built around one clan: matriarch Lou Beale, her children Pete Beale and Pauline Fowler, and their kids. Everything grows from there. Ian Beale is Pete and Kathy's son; Pauline's children are Mark, Michelle, and Martin Fowler.
Ian's kids — Peter, the late Lucy, and Bobby — carry the line on, with Peter's sons Louie and Jimmy the newest branch.
Michelle Fowler is where it gets spicy: her daughter Vicki was fathered by Den Watts when Michelle was 16, and her son Mark Fowler Jnr's dad is Grant Mitchell. One woman, two of Walford's biggest dynasties.
The Mitchells: connected to everyone
Phil and Grant Mitchell, sister Sam, and cousin Billy anchor the family — but the crucial link is Kathy Beale. She's Ian's mum and Ben Mitchell's mum, making Ian Beale and Ben Mitchell half-brothers. Yes, really. Ben's daughter Lexi Pearce (with Lola) is therefore both a Mitchell and, through Kathy, Ian's great-niece of sorts.
The Brannings: the connective tissue
The Brannings marry into everything. The key threads:
- Max Branning — father of Lauren and Abi; his granddaughter (also Abi) was fathered by Steven Beale, Ian's adoptive son.
- Lauren Branning — married to Peter Beale, welding the Brannings to the Beales.
- Jack Branning — Max's brother, long entangled with the Mitchells through Ronnie.
- Ricky Branning — Jack's son, and father of baby Charli with Lily Slater.
The Slaters: the tangled ones
The Slaters arrived in 2000 with the mother of all reveals — Kat's "sister" Zoe was actually her daughter. Today the household centres on Stacey Slater, her mum Jean, and Stacey's kids: Lily (whose daughter Charli makes Stacey a grandmother), Hope (with Martin Fowler), and Arthur (with Kush Kazemi).
Martin adopted Lily — which quietly grafts the Slaters onto the Beale–Fowler tree too.

Honestly, fewer people than you'd think.
Between Kathy bridging the Beales and Mitchells, Michelle bridging the Fowlers, Watts, and Mitchells, Lauren bridging the Brannings and Beales, and baby Charli bridging the Slaters and Brannings — nearly every major family in Walford now shares a Christmas dinner table, whether they like it or not.
