Who dies in House of the Dragon? Season 3's finale alone stacks the list — including one fans had long been dreading
House of the Dragon's third season aired eight episodes between June 21 and August 9, 2026, and it opened by killing Rhaenyra's heir. It closed by killing five more people in a single hour.
The finale, episode 8, covers the First Battle of Tumbleton and its immediate aftermath. Here's the body count.
Who dies in the season 3 finale
- Queen Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) — the one book readers had been bracing for since season 2. Held under guard in the Red Keep for the entire season while pregnant, force-fed on Rhaenyra's orders, she takes her own life by going out a window. It matches her fate in Fire & Blood, though the show reorders the circumstances around it.
- Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) — stabbed by Roderick Dustin during hand-to-hand fighting on the battlements, then burned by Silverwing's fire, courtesy of the dragonseed he'd spent the season mistreating.
- Ser Roderick Dustin (Tommy Flanagan) — Roddy the Ruin, leader of the Winter Wolves, who spent eight episodes announcing his intention to die in Rhaenyra's name and got exactly that, holding Ormund as the dragonfire hit.
- The High Septon (Simon Chandler) — refused to anoint Rhaenyra as queen. She had Ser Alyn of Hull kill him for it, and Alyn hesitated before doing it.
- Kat (Ellora Torchia) — Hugh Hammer's wife, killed off screen during the sack of Tumbleton. Hugh finds her body.
Ulf White, meanwhile, torched both Ormund and Roderick, then set fire to the town he'd just switched sides to defend.
The rest of the season
The finale wasn't an outlier. Season 3 also killed Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (shot out of the water at the Battle of the Gullet in episode 1), Captain Sharako Lohar, Ser Otto Hightower (executed by Rhaenyra after the fall of King's Landing, with Alicent watching), Lord Jasper Wylde, Ser Simon Strong and his two sons (Aemond, at Harrenhal), Lord Jason Lannister (off screen, head delivered to Daemon on a spike), Ser Luthor Largent, and Ser Criston Cole at the Butcher's Ball in episode 6.
Who survived that you might have assumed didn't
Prince Daeron Targaryen's fate is deliberately unresolved — Gwayne Hightower is last seen crawling through the ruins looking for him, and the show never shows a body. His dragon Tessarion flies clear of the blast. In this franchise, that combination usually means he's back. Hugh Hammer also lives, minus his wife and, presumably, minus any remaining reason to be reasonable.
