What happens to Harry in The Hardacres? It begins with a stolen letter
Series 2 of Channel 5's The Hardacres, set in 1895, hands its youngest son the worst year of his life, and it starts with a piece of paper. Harry Hardacre — played by Zak Ford-Williams — is 18, tutored at home, and has written something he really should not have written down.
Harry writes a love letter to his tutor, Arthur Lewis. It's intercepted before Arthur ever reads it, ends up with Lady Imelda Hansen, and she uses it to threaten Harry with prosecution unless the family vacate Hardacre Hall. He isn't prosecuted. The series ends with him engaged to a woman and offered an Oxford interview.
The letter
Harry slips it under Arthur's door. Adella Fitzherbert sees him do it and takes it, and it makes its way to her grandmother, Lady Imelda Hansen (Michele Dotrice), who burns the envelope and keeps the contents. There's nothing ambiguous in it — Harry opens by addressing Arthur as his dearest and stating plainly that his feelings are romantic. The timing is the point. Gross indecency was a criminal offence, Oscar Wilde had been convicted that same year, and the series has already name-checked the scandal.
Imelda's threat
She arrives at Hardacre Hall announcing that a scandalous letter has come into her possession, tells the family that Harry's feelings put him in flagrant violation of the law, and gives them a choice: leave the house, or she hands the letter to the magistrate. Ma Hardacre's response is to call it a war and start planning how to keep Harry out of prison.
How Harry gets out of it
The family never needs the battle plan. Adella, who blames herself for the whole thing, proposes an engagement to Harry — it kills the rumours about him and ties the Hardacres to the Fitzherberts permanently. Her mother Emma (Cathy Belton) then goes further, asks Imelda for the letter, hands it back to Harry, and throws her own mother out:
"You poisoned my life, and it ends now. I want you gone from my house, and you can take your poison dowry with you," Emma tells Imelda in the series 2 finale.
What happens to Arthur
He leaves. Arthur says goodbye to Harry, wishes him well for Oxford, and departs Hardacre Hall to limit the damage. Channel 5 had not confirmed a series 3 as of August 2026, which leaves Harry engaged to Adella and holding an Oxford interview as the two loose threads most likely to be picked up.
For the record: the letter Imelda spent two episodes weaponising ends up back in Harry's hands, never having been read by the man it was addressed to.
