What happens at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand? Keep watching past the credits
The third X-Men film, released on 26 May 2006, ends on a run of gut punches — and then quietly undoes two of them, one in the final scene and one hidden after the credits. Here's how it all shakes out.
The battle for the cure
The finale plays out on Alcatraz Island, where Worthington Labs has developed a "cure" for mutation derived from a young mutant called Leech. Magneto (Ian McKellen) leads his Brotherhood in an assault on the facility, and the X-Men — already reeling from the deaths of Cyclops and Professor Xavier earlier in the film — make their stand.
Magneto loses. While Wolverine distracts him, Beast (Kelsey Grammer) jabs him with cure injectors, stripping him of his powers on the spot. The most dangerous mutant on Earth becomes an ordinary man in seconds.
How Jean Grey's story ends
Then comes the hard part. Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), consumed by the Dark Phoenix, starts disintegrating everything around her. Wolverine is the only one who can reach her — his healing factor lets him walk through her telekinetic storm. He tells her he loves her, and kills her.
The aftermath is quick and bittersweet: Rogue has voluntarily taken the cure so she can finally touch her boyfriend Bobby, and Beast becomes the US ambassador to the United Nations.
The chess piece — wait for it
The film's last proper scene finds a de-powered Magneto alone in a San Francisco park, sitting at a chessboard. He reaches towards a metal piece — and it wobbles. The cure isn't permanent. His powers are coming back.
The post-credits scene
Sit through the credits and you get the bigger reversal. Dr Moira MacTaggert (Olivia Williams) checks on a comatose patient — a man born without a functioning consciousness, referenced in Xavier's ethics lecture earlier in the film.
The patient opens his eyes and speaks in Patrick Stewart's voice: "Hello, Moira."
Xavier transferred his mind into the empty body before Phoenix destroyed his own. The professor lives.
So, in short:
- Magneto — de-powered by the cure, but the final shot shows it's already wearing off.
- Jean Grey — killed by Wolverine to stop the Phoenix.
- Rogue — takes the cure by choice.
- Professor X — dead on screen, alive after the credits.
For the record: this was 2006 — two years before Iron Man made post-credits scenes standard practice. Plenty of cinema-goers walked out and missed the return of Charles Xavier entirely.
