Prime Video's We Were Liars — the eight-episode adaptation of E. Lockhart's 2014 bestseller, released on 18 June 2025 — saves its knockout blow for the finale. Major spoilers from here on, obviously.

The twist: Johnny, Mirren, and Gat are dead. They died in a fire on Beechwood Island at the end of Summer 16, and everyone Cadence has been laughing, arguing, and falling in love with all through Summer 17 has been a ghost. She's the only Liar left alive.

What actually happened in Summer 16

Cadence spends the season piecing together the night of her "accident" — the one that left her with a head injury, chronic migraines, and selective amnesia. In the final episodes, it all comes back:

  • The plan — after uncovering their grandfather Harris's manipulations over the inheritance, the four Liars decide to burn down his mansion, Clairmont, to torch the source of the family's rot.
  • The fire — they split up to light it with boat fuel and newspaper, badly underestimating how fast it would spread.
  • The dogs — the family dogs were locked inside, and Cadence couldn't save them.
  • The deaths — Johnny and Mirren were trapped on the upper floors; Gat ran back in looking for Cadence. Then a gas main exploded, throwing Cadence into the water, where she hit her head on the rocks.

The deal Cadence refuses

The official story is faulty wiring. But Harris knows the truth — and in the finale he uses it, threatening to expose Cadence unless she takes her place as heir to the Sinclair fortune. She walks away anyway, telling a reporter she's "just really not into fairytales anymore", as covered in Time's 2025 breakdown of the finale. Before leaving, she says goodbye to the three ghosts and apologises to Gat for being the reason he went back inside.

The extra twist the book doesn't have

Lockhart herself wrote the finale episode, and she added a coda that isn't in the novel. Carrie — Johnny's mother — returns to her house on the island, and we discover she's broken years of sobriety and has also been seeing her dead son's ghost all summer. When she assumed he'd moved on, his reply suggests he can't leave. That's essentially the opening of Lockhart's 2022 prequel, Family of Liars.

Is season 2 happening?

Yes. Prime Video renewed the show on 17 September 2025, with season 2 drawing on Family of Liars — jumping back to 1999 to follow the Sinclair sisters as teenagers and the mysterious "Summer 16" Bess hints was the reason for everything.

In May 2026, six new series regulars were announced, including Josh Dallas, Peyton List, and Madison Wolfe, playing younger versions of the family.

So the twist isn't the end of Beechwood Island — it's the invitation to the next round of secrets. And once you know the truth, a rewatch turns every scene with the Liars into something completely different. That's the point.
