What happens at the end of season 1 of Paradise? The killer reveal and that final shot

Paradise spent eight episodes building an intricate mystery inside an underground bunker built to shelter America's elite after a nuclear catastrophe. At its centre: who killed President Cal Bradford (James Marsden)?

The killer

The murderer is Trent (Ian Merrigan) — the quiet librarian who had been hiding in plain sight all season. Trent wasn't a librarian at all. He was the construction foreman who oversaw the building of Paradise years earlier. During construction, he discovered the mountain was laced with a lethal arsenic compound that would slowly kill the workers. When he raised the alarm, the project's organiser Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) buried the truth. Workers died. Trent's rage festered for years.

He smuggled himself into Paradise under a false identity, biding his time. He was also the failed assassin from the pilot's flashback — the one who tried to kill Cal before and shot Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) instead.

In the finale, Xavier and the security team corner Trent on the artificial "sky" — the lighting rig at the top of the dome. With nowhere to go, Trent throws himself off, plummeting to his death on a rooftop below.

The final shots

After Trent's death, the power dynamics in Paradise shift dramatically. Xavier confronts Sinatra. Before he can act, Jane shoots Sinatra (non-fatally) and reveals that Xavier's daughter Presley is alive and safe. Meanwhile, Sinatra tells Xavier that his wife Teri is also alive somewhere in the outside world — she survived the nuclear event.

The season ends with two key images: Jane sitting alone playing on her Wii, calm and calculating; and Xavier boarding a small jet, opening the sealed doors between Paradise and the irradiated world above. He has President Bradford's notebook in hand and one mission — find Teri.

Season 2 has been confirmed, with creator Dan Fogelman promising a faster turnaround than the typical multi-year gap.
