Obsession, directed by Curry Barker and released on 15 May 2026, has been getting attention mostly because of its ending — a final sequence so bleak that audiences have been leaving cinemas in stunned silence.

If you've seen it and need help untangling what happened, or if you'd rather read about it than watch it, here's the full breakdown.

The premise

Bear (Michael Johnston) is a twenty-something music shop employee with an unrequited crush on his childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). After failing to ask her out, he breaks a novelty item called a One Wish Willow — a supposedly magical trinket he'd originally bought as a gift for her — and wishes that Nikki would love him "more than anyone in the entire world."

The wish works. Nikki begins showing romantic interest in Bear almost immediately, and they start dating. At first, everything seems perfect.

How it goes wrong

Nikki's affection quickly shifts from sweet to suffocating to terrifying. She watches Bear sleep. She becomes violent when she feels his attention drifting. At one point, the real Nikki surfaces briefly in the middle of the night, whispering to Bear that whatever has taken her over is "asleep" — and begging him to end her life. The film makes it clear that the wish hasn't simply changed Nikki's feelings. It has effectively replaced her with a possessive entity, while the real Nikki is trapped somewhere inside, fully aware of what's happening.

Bear contacts the One Wish Willow company and learns that the only way to break the wish is for him to die. He buys several more Willows hoping a friend can use one to reverse everything, but discovers he can't break them himself — a supernatural safeguard against second wishes.

The final act

Things spiral fast. Nikki kills Bear's friend Sarah after seeing her in a car with Bear. Bear flees to his friend Ian's house, where Ian breaks his own Willow and is instantly granted a billion dollars in cash. Bear rushes back home hoping Nikki will use a Willow to undo the wish. Instead, he finds Sarah's body and then Nikki shoots Ian when he follows Bear inside.

Bear locks himself in the bathroom and swallows a bottle of prescription medication — his only remaining way to break the wish.

The twist

While Bear is in the bathroom, you can hear the faint sound of a One Wish Willow snapping. Nikki has used one. Her wish — implied but not stated outright — is for Bear to love her the way she loves him.

Bear stops his attempt to purge the pills. He walks calmly out of the bathroom and embraces Nikki. It looks, for a brief moment, like a reconciliation. But the overdose is already taking effect. Bear collapses and dies in Nikki's arms.

His death breaks both wishes. The entity releases Nikki. The real Nikki surfaces — and is left screaming, surrounded by the aftermath of everything the wish caused: dead friends, a destroyed home, and no clear memory of how much of it was her and how much was the thing wearing her face.

The film originally had an even darker ending where Nikki also died, but Barker chose the version where she survives, calling it "more gruesome" precisely because it forces the question of what happens next. Her screams carry into the end credits.
