What happens at the end of Hacks? The finale detours through Paris — Deborah buys out the Louvre for an afternoon
How Hacks ends: what the series finale does with Deborah and Ava, the Paris trip, the private Louvre visit, and the decision that closes five seasons of the Emmy-winning HBO Max comedy — plus how the crew actually got into the Louvre to film it.
Hacks wrapped its fifth and final season in May 2026 with a finale titled, fittingly, "Hacks" — and after five seasons of Vegas residencies, late-night wars, and one glorious free show in Central Park, creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky sent Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels somewhere new entirely. Spoilers follow.
The setup
The finale opens with everything apparently in place: Ava is running her own pilot — a Who's Making Dinner? reboot — and Deborah has just opened her casino, The Diva, alongside Marcus and Marty. Then Deborah tells Ava the truth over lunch on the strip: her cancer wasn't eliminated, it has spread, and she's not interested in wasting away. Her plan is a final trip to Paris with Ava, ending at an assisted-dying clinic in Zurich. Ava refuses. Then, nudged by Jimmy to respect Deborah's decision, she turns up at the airport anyway.
Paris, itemised
- Real bread — Deborah finally makes good on a promise dating back to season 3, when Ava admitted she'd never left the country.
- The flea market — Deborah teaches Ava to haggle, then declines a set of genuine Meissen salt-and-pepper shakers. She won't be going home to display them.
- Driving stick — Ava, grinding through Paris traffic in a tiny manual car, wants to know why she's in "the rough draft of a car".
- The Louvre — Deborah buys out the entire museum so the two of them can wander it alone for an afternoon.
- The club — Ava picks Deborah's outfit: oversized football jersey, baggy black jeans. It works.

"The Mona Lisa? Is mid?" — Ava's considered position on the world's most famous painting, while Deborah takes the museum rather more reverently.
The choice
Ava spends the trip trying to change the plan — including a pitch for a clinical trial that Deborah bats away, pointing out that for someone who preaches listening to women, Ava is doing remarkably little of it. But en route to Zurich, the two start riffing about what Deborah might actually enjoy about being sick. Jokes accumulate. And mid-riff, Deborah realises the illness is material — a new hour, written with Ava. She chooses treatment and work over the clinic. The Eiffel Tower dissolves into its Vegas replica, and the final shot has the two of them walking the strip, planning the special, as Barbra Streisand's "Happy Days Are Here Again" plays.
Whether Deborah beats the cancer is left open on purpose. Aniello told Variety the sickness existed for one reason — the comedy and the writing saving her life:
"We wouldn't have had her die," Aniello told Variety in May 2026.
Statsky, for her part, told TheWrap the team had been building to this exact ending for a long time.
How they actually filmed the Louvre
The creators wanted Paris for the finale from the very beginning — and the Louvre most of all. Then the museum's 2025 jewel heist made permission a nightmare. With the answer stuck in limbo, Aniello, Downs, and Statsky persuaded Universal TV and HBO Max to extend the Paris stay while they waited it out — Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder included, with Aniello editing the season from a hotel room in the meantime. The gamble paid off: the crew got the Louvre to themselves for an afternoon on a day it was closed.
Deborah Vance would have approved of the method. If you can't get in the front door, wait them out and buy the room.
