What happens at the end of Gary? The Bear's surprise episode ends on its darkest cliffhanger
On 5 May 2026, FX dropped a surprise standalone episode of The Bear with no warning whatsoever — an hour-long prequel called "Gary", written by and starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal, and directed by series creator Christopher Storer. Most of it is a bittersweet 2019 road trip. The last thirty seconds are something else entirely.
What the episode is about
Set shortly before season 1, "Gary" follows Richie and Mikey driving from Chicago to Gary, Indiana — about 40 minutes away — to deliver a mystery box for Uncle Jimmy. Richie's pregnant wife Tiff (Gillian Jacobs) is days from her due date and wants him home by 5:15pm. He doesn't make it, obviously.
The pair get derailed at a bar, where Mikey opens up to a stranger named Sherri (Marin Ireland) and, later, tells Richie — cruelly, and while high — that he'll be a terrible father and should leave.
It's the 39th episode of the series, and the only one ever released completely on its own, outside a season.
The ending, explained
After the trip home, the episode suddenly cuts to the present day: Richie, alone in his car, in his maître d' uniform, staring at the empty passenger seat where Mikey — long dead by now — once sat. His light turns green. He pulls into the intersection. Another car runs the red and slams into him at full speed.
Cut to black.
That's it. No resolution, no epilogue — just Richie's fate hanging in the air ahead of the final season.
So did Richie die?
No — and we know that now. The fifth and final season arrived on 25 June 2026, all eight episodes at once, and the premiere reveals Richie walked away from the crash essentially unscathed: shaken, furious at the other driver, and late for work on the restaurant's most chaotic day. The cliffhanger was a fake-out — the crash matters emotionally, not medically.
Moss-Bachrach has hinted the whole episode should be read through that final image. Speaking to ABC7 in May 2026, he said:
"Memories are not completely truthful, as we know."
In other words, the entire Gary trip may be Richie's imperfect memory of Mikey — right down to whether Mikey's parting words were ever really that cruel.
