What happens at the end of Everybody Hates Chris? The GED twist, explained
Everybody Hates Chris ended on 8 May 2009 with "Everybody Hates the G.E.D." — a finale built around one deliberately maddening cut to black. Chris drops out of high school, sits the GED, and the screen goes dark before anyone reads his result. It took fifteen years and an animated sequel to settle the question.
What happens in the finale
Chris (Tyler James Williams) discovers the school holds back any student who's late 30 times — and his unreliable public transport has pushed him right to the line. Rather than repeat the tenth grade at a school where the teachers harass him, he drops out and takes the GED. Rochelle and Julius resist the idea, then back him.
Then comes the diner scene. The family gathers in a booth, Chris puts Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer" on the tabletop jukebox, and Julius finally arrives with the envelope holding the results. Chris asks the last line of the entire series — "What's it say?" — and the screen cuts to black.
The Sopranos joke
The whole scene spoofs "Made in America", the 2007 Sopranos finale: the diner booth, the jukebox pick (Bon Jovi standing in for Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'"), a menacing stranger at the counter, and even Julius struggling to park his truck outside, mirroring Meadow's parallel parking. Then the same infamous blackout. The episode even drops the show's usual closing jingle — the only one that does.
So did Chris pass?
Depends who you ask. In a 2020 Twitter Q&A, Tyler James Williams gave fans his answer:
"Yes, he does and drops out. This starts the journey to comedy."
The franchise itself went another way.
The sequel finally answered it
Everybody Still Hates Chris, an animated continuation, premiered on Comedy Central on 25 September 2024, with Chris Rock narrating again, Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold returning as Julius and Rochelle, and Tim Johnson Jr. voicing Chris. It picks up at that exact diner table — and Chris has failed. Rochelle slaps him so hard the whole world turns into a cartoon.
For the record: the real Chris Rock never graduated from high school, but earned his GED and went to work at Red Lobster. The rest is stand-up history.
