What happens at the end of Eternals? The Celestial, the sacrifice, and two post-credits twists
Eternals crams more into its final act than most Marvel films manage in a whole runtime — a planet-sized twist, a betrayal, a transformation, and two post-credits scenes the MCU still hasn't paid off. Here's what actually happens at the end of the 2021 film, and what it all means.
The Emergence, explained
The twist lands before the finale: the Eternals weren't sent to protect humanity, but to shepherd it. A new Celestial, Tiamut, has been gestating inside the Earth's core for millennia, feeding on the energy of its growing population — and its birth, the Emergence, will destroy the planet.
The team splits over it.
Ikaris sides with their creator Arishem, revealing he led Ajak to her death to keep the plan on track. In the climax, as Tiamut begins tearing out of the Earth's crust in the Indian Ocean, Sersi links the Eternals into the Uni-Mind and channels its power to freeze the emerging Celestial into marble. The planet lives. Tiamut doesn't.
The sacrifice — two of them, really
Ikaris, unable to live with betraying his family and unable to stop them, flies into the sun. And Sprite, offered one use of the Uni-Mind's leftover energy, chooses to give up her powers and become a mortal, ageing human — the thing she's wanted for thousands of years.
Then Arishem arrives. The Celestial plucks Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo off the Earth and announces he will judge humanity through their memories — and return for a verdict. Thena, Makkari, and Druig, already in deep space aboard the Domo, know nothing about it.
The mid-credits scene: enter Harry Styles
Aboard the Domo, a teleporting troll named Pip introduces his companion: Eros, also known as Starfox — Royal Prince of Titan and brother of Thanos, played by Harry Styles. He knows where their taken friends are, and he offers to help.
The post-credits scene: the Black Knight and a familiar voice
Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) opens an old family case containing the Ebony Blade, a cursed sword that whispers to him. As he reaches for it, an unseen voice asks:
"Sure you're ready for that, Mr. Whitman?"
Director Chloé Zhao confirmed the voice belongs to Mahershala Ali's Blade. Whitman, in the comics, becomes the Black Knight.
Where everyone ends up
- Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo — taken by Arishem, awaiting judgment.
- Thena, Makkari, and Druig — in deep space with Eros and Pip.
- Sprite — human, mortal, and starting school.
- Ikaris — dead in the sun. Ajak and Gilgamesh — killed earlier in the film.
Years on, none of it has been resolved — no Eternals sequel has been announced, Eros hasn't reappeared, and the Blade film remains stuck in development. Two cliffhangers, still hanging.
