What happens at the end of Enola Holmes? Every film's finale, from the Reform Act vote to the wedding in Malta
Three Enola Holmes films, three very different finales: a vote in the House of Lords in 2020's original, an unmasked Moriarty in 2022's sequel, and — as of the third film's release on 1 July 2026 — a wedding in Malta. Here's how each one ends.
Enola Holmes (2020): the Reform Act vote
The first film's mystery turns out to be political. The assassination attempts on young Lord Tewkesbury were ordered by his own grandmother, the Dowager, to stop him taking his seat and voting for the Reform Bill expanding the franchise.
She shoots him in the finale — and he survives thanks to the breastplate hidden under his jacket.
Tewkesbury casts his vote, the bill passes, and Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) refuses both Mycroft's finishing school and her mother's shadow, setting up as a detective in her own right. Eudoria's brief, proud visit closes the film.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022): the strike and Moriarty
The sequel builds its case on a real event — the 1888 matchgirls' strike — and a real person, factory worker Sarah Chapman. Enola exposes a cover-up at the match factory, where phosphorus poisoning was being passed off as typhus.
The corrupt Superintendent Grail (David Thewlis) falls in the final confrontation, and the true mastermind is revealed: Treasury official Mira Troy, alias Moriarty (Sharon Duncan-Brewster), who is arrested. Sarah leads her matchgirls out on strike, Enola opens her own agency, and a mid-credits scene delivers a certain Dr John Watson to the door of 221B Baker Street.
Enola Holmes 3 (2026): the wedding in Malta
The third film opens with Enola due to marry Tewkesbury in Valletta — and immediately derails it.
"I read somewhere that all good stories start with a wedding."
That's Enola's opening narration, delivered as she fails to reach the altar: Watson (Himesh Patel) arrives with news that Sherlock has been kidnapped. The trail leads to Moriarty, who escaped custody after the second film and has been operating in Malta as "Professor Adeline Rathe".
Her scheme uses the Holmes family to locate gold looted by British soldiers from an Afghan shrine at the Battle of Khost — a massacre later pinned on innocent Maltese soldiers, with Tewkesbury's late father and his godfather, Brigadier Sampson, tangled in the cover-up.
Enola rescues Sherlock and Lady Tewkesbury, Moriarty is arrested again, Sampson is exposed, the gold is returned, and the framed Maltese soldiers are finally cleared. Then the wedding — the real one. Tewkesbury renounces his tarnished title, becoming plain Earnest Tebbity-Gore, and the couple marry in a small cliffside ceremony officiated by the still-fugitive Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter). The very last shot dives underwater to a shipwreck named The Wrath of Adeline — the source of Moriarty's alias, and an unmistakable hook for a fourth film.
