What happens at the end of Enola Holmes 3? The ending, and the sequel it sets up
Enola Holmes 3 opens with a wedding that falls apart and closes with one that doesn't. In between, Netflix's third outing for Millie Bobby Brown's detective — released on 1 July 2026 — takes her to Malta, drops her brother into a conspiracy, and brings back the franchise's biggest villain.

The ending in brief
- The villain — Moriarty (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) is back, having escaped custody after Enola Holmes 2, hiding behind the identity "Professor Adeline Rathe".
- The mystery — a cover-up of the Battle of Khost, where British soldiers massacred civilians and stole gold from an Afghan shrine. Tewkesbury's late father sank the gold off Malta rather than hand it over.
- The rescue — Sherlock and Lady Tewkesbury are freed, and Moriarty ends up back in custody.
- The wedding — Enola and Tewkesbury do get married. Just not the way anyone planned.
Who kidnapped Sherlock — and why
Moriarty engineered everything, including the venue. Her agent planted the idea of a Malta wedding with Lady Tewkesbury, luring Enola to the island so the Holmes siblings would do what they do best: find things. Sherlock's kidnapping was the bait; the sunken Afghan gold was the prize.
Even the mysterious "Adeline Rathe" turned out not to be a person at all — the name was wordplay on the wrecked ship hiding the treasure, The Wrath of Adeline. It's the one clue Enola misses entirely.
In the finale, Enola recovers the gold, fights Moriarty, and stops Sherlock from killing her — a Holmes doesn't kill. Lady Tewkesbury knocks the villain out with a rock instead. The gold is set to be returned to Afghanistan, the corrupt Brigadier Sampson is arrested, and the wrongly blamed Maltese soldiers are cleared.
Do Enola and Tewkesbury get married?
Yes — after he stops being Lord Tewkesbury. Shaken by his father's part in the Khost crimes, he renounces his title and his seat in the House of Lords, choosing to live under his birth name, Earnest Augustus Tebbity-Gore. Enola, for her part, stays Enola Holmes. They marry in a small clifftop ceremony, officiated by her mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter).
The sequel it sets up
Moriarty survives. She's carted off to a supposedly escape-proof prison — but she's already escaped once, and the film knows you know that. Screenwriter Jack Thorne told Netflix's Tudum in 2026:
"None of these endings are full stops. All of these endings are commas"
Moriarty in a cell, Enola married but still very much on the case. Commas, indeed.
