The Next 365 Days (Kolejne 365 dni) landed on Netflix on 19 August 2022, ran 113 minutes, and finished the trilogy with the one thing the trilogy had been building to: Massimo asking Laura to pick him or Nacho. Then it cuts.

The choice does exist. It's in Blanka Lipińska's novel, and it isn't the one the film implies.

In the film, Laura gives no answer — Massimo asks on the beach, she says nothing, the credits roll. In the third novel, she chooses Nacho. She leaves Massimo after discovering he killed her dog and tried to pin it on Nacho, runs off with Nacho, and the pair eventually have a baby.

How the film gets there

Laura survives the attack that closed 365 Days: This Day and spends the third film oscillating. She meets Nacho again in Lagos, Portugal — she's there for a fashion fair, he's there for a surfing competition — and they sleep together on the beach. Massimo confronts her at the hotel; she asks for space and threatens divorce; he agrees.

She goes home to Poland, tells her parents she doesn't know who she loves, then returns to Sicily. Nacho meets her posing as her chauffeur and asks her to be with him. She says she needs to think. Massimo, on the beach, says his father taught him not to force love, and asks for her decision.

She doesn't give one. That's the end of the film.

What the book does instead

  • The second loss — Laura and Massimo drift apart after losing another child, and both start using.
  • The dog — Massimo kills Laura's dog and frames Nacho for it. She finds out.
  • The choice — she cuts ties with Massimo and leaves with Nacho.
  • The epilogue — Nacho and Laura have a child together.

Lipińska co-wrote the screenplay, so the divergence was a deliberate call rather than an adaptation slip.

"Laura is me," Lipińska told TODAY in 2022.

Is there a part 4?

Nothing has been announced, and there's no fourth novel to adapt — the trilogy ends with Kolejne 365 dni. The film's non-answer leaves room for one, which is presumably the point. Reviews won't have helped: the third film holds a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes from six reviews.

For the record: the trilogy's second and third instalments were shot back to back in 2021, which is why Massimo's twin brother Adriano dies at the end of one film and is being visited at his grave in the opening minutes of the next.
