What happened to Darlene in Death in Paradise — and is Ginny Holder coming back?
If you sat down for the series 15 premiere of Death in Paradise on 30 January 2026 and spent the whole episode waiting for Darlene Curtis to wander into the station — you weren't alone. She never did, and the explanation took precisely one line of dialogue.
How the show wrote her out
When Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) returned to Saint Marie and asked where Officer Curtis was, DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) had the answer ready:
"She's over at Montserrat looking after her aunty," Wilson explains in the episode, adding he doesn't expect her back for the foreseeable.
That was the entire send-off. No farewell scene, no toast at Catherine's bar — the subject was dropped and the murder of the week rolled on. For a character who'd been around since 2018, plenty of viewers felt short-changed.
What Ginny Holder has said
Neither Holder nor the BBC has given a reason for the exit. Her own goodbye came via social media, where she wrote that "playing Darlene was an absolute gift" and admitted the goodbye had been more emotional than she expected.
Don Warrington told Radio Times the departure was sad, though he was philosophical about it: "these things happen. It's the nature of the business."
Darlene's run on the show
- 2018 — first appears as a guest character, with history attached to Danny John-Jules's Dwayne Myers.
- 2022 — joins the force properly, becoming a series regular as a trainee officer in her fifties. Unusual for the genre, and a big part of her appeal.
- 2025 — still on the team for series 14, working under new lead DI Mervin Wilson.
- 2026 — absent from series 15, with Catherine Garton's Sergeant Mattie Fletcher arriving in the same premiere.
So is she coming back?
The door is open — deliberately so. The show's official Instagram account hinted as much after the premiere, and the on-screen explanation is the retrievable kind: an aunt in Montserrat is not a coffin, a wedding, or a one-way ticket to London. As of August 2026, though, no return has been announced.
