What episode of Peaky Blinders does John die in?
If you're bracing yourself for the worst — or trying to figure out how far you can safely discuss the show with a friend — here's the exact moment one of the original Shelby brothers leaves the story. Fair warning: it comes much earlier than you'd expect.
The short answer
John Shelby dies in season 4, episode 1, "The Noose," which first aired on November 15, 2017. In the episode's closing minutes, gunmen working for New York mafioso Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) ambush John at his countryside farmhouse on Christmas Day and shoot him dead in front of his wife Esme and his cousin Michael. Michael is badly wounded but survives.
No slow decline, no farewell arc. One episode into the season, and he's gone.
Why the Changrettas came for him
John's death was the bill for a vendetta he personally started. The chain of events ran across two seasons:
- The stabbing — in season 3, John attacks Angel Changretta and stabs him in the eye over Angel's relationship with Lizzie Stark.
- The retaliation — the Changrettas send a hitman after Tommy; the shooter misses and kills Tommy's wife, Grace, instead.
- The escalation — in the season 3 finale, Arthur shoots family patriarch Vicente Changretta in the head.
- The Black Hand — Vicente's son Luca arrives from America with black-hand letters for the whole family: a Mafia death sentence. John is the first name crossed off.
The cruelest touch: the season opens with John, Arthur, Polly, and Michael escaping the hangman's noose with seconds to spare — pardoned, freed, and seemingly safe. The episode title wasn't about the gallows at all.
The real reason he was killed off
Joe Cole, who had played John since the show began in 2013, wanted out — and never announced it, which is why the death landed as a genuine shock. He later explained his thinking:
"With Peaky Blinders I never really got out of the gates in that role," Cole told Metro in 2022.
He'd said much the same to The Independent in 2019, admitting he didn't want to be remembered as just the "guy in the Peaky Blinders." With Cillian Murphy's Tommy carrying the series, Cole felt his exit wouldn't derail the show — and went on to lead projects like Gangs of London.
What his death set in motion
Everything that follows in season 4. John's murder reunites the fractured family under one roof, Esme leaves Birmingham after laying a Romany curse on the Shelbys, and the season becomes a war of attrition that ends with Arthur personally executing Luca Changretta.
