Well, that’s a swing — The Walking Dead went full MCU to bring fan-favourite character back

Here we go again — The Walking Dead universe just can’t help itself, wandering off the map and dragging old faces back in for one more round. This time it’s Beth Greene making her surprise return, but don’t get too excited about miracles. The twist? She’s back for Season 3 of Dead City, but only thanks to a full-on alternate reality detour. Yes, that means Beth isn’t resurrected as another tragic walker. She pops up in a world where none of the zombie business ever kicked off in the first place.

Now, if you were hoping for some wild reverse of Beth’s death scene in Season 5, sorry to disappoint. This doesn’t rewrite history — it’s a kind of Marvel-inspired 'what if' scenario, plonking Beth and her big sister Maggie Rhee (that’s Lauren Cohan’s character, for the forgetful) in a normal, apocalypse-free New York City. In other words, the only thing biting is the cold in Central Park, not the undead.

Beth’s Comeback — Sort Of

Entertainment Weekly got the first snaps of Emily Kinney and Cohan together, this time at Bethesda Fountain for a bit of sisterly time that’s been nine years in the making. This marks Kinney’s first gig as Beth since her exit back in the main series. Kinney herself sounded pretty surprised by it all, saying when she made her return official with Cohan:

"I never would’ve imagined that I was coming back at all," Kinney said when she announced her return with Cohan.

In this alternate timeline, it’s not just reunion hugs — Beth finally gets to be the musician she was always banging on about. There’s a performance scene, with Kinney actually singing her own tune called 'Reasons to Stay Alive'. On top of that, she’s just released another track, 'Hold On' — earlier performed as Beth in the third season, now out as a proper single.

Back in the Groove

You’d think jumping back into a role after a full decade would feel odd, but Kinney told EW it felt "really natural." Apparently, seeing so many familiar faces on set put her right back in the mix, like she’d never left.

• Kinney talked about how returning to the show felt instinctive, saying the entire Walking Dead experience was 'just stuck' with her, so she "fit in" easily.
• Her on-screen connection with Cohan made it all work: Kinney described Cohan as an excellent scene partner and listener, which made their sister act feel like old times.
• This new chapter finally lets Beth live out her dream as a musician — not stuck on Hershel’s farm dodging walkers.

For Kinney, showing this other life for Beth is a point of pride — she gets to step out of the survival horror for once and actually follow her own path. As far as Walking Dead stunts go, it’s a clever spin, especially if you’re still mourning half the original cast.
