Unexpected Mid-Flight Drama
On Wednesday afternoon, a Delta Airlines flight — call sign 958, Boeing 767 in case you want to check your own next time — was making the usual slog from LAX to JFK when the cabin suddenly picked up a whiff of what can only be described as a 'smoky' pong. Not ideal. The crew decided Albuquerque, New Mexico, would be their detour of choice, so down they went at Albuquerque International Sunport. No injuries, no fireballs, but a definite change of plans for the passengers, who just wanted to get to New York without having to Google 'Albuquerque'.
On Delta Flight 958 (LAX to JFK) on 9 September, a smoky odour diverted the plane to Albuquerque. Delta apologised: 'The aircraft landed uneventfully, and our teams worked to re-accommodate customers as quickly as possible to their final destinations.'
The plane was inspected, the passengers rebooked, and Delta said their sorries in all the right places. This wasn’t, say, Tom Hanks in Sully levels of drama — but it’s still not the sort of thing anyone signs up for with their in-flight snack.
