Makoto Yukimura, the mind behind Vinland Saga, has responded to speculation about a third anime series, clarifying that he has yet to hear any official word on its production.

Fans of the historical epic have been left in limbo once more, as Makoto Yukimura, the creator of Vinland Saga, has stepped in to quash the latest round of speculation about a third instalment of the anime. The rumour mill had been churning with claims that a new series was already underway, but Yukimura himself appears to be just as much in the dark as the rest of us.

“To all the Vinland Saga fans, thank you as always,” Yukimura wrote on Twitter. “I just learned a moment ago that there's a rumour going around that season 3 of the anime Vinland Saga is currently in production. However, that information hasn't reached me yet. I hope it's in production... But man, animating Hild's crossbow and stuff like that must be really tough, right.”

His comments, delivered with a touch of dry humour, suggest that even the series’ creator is not privy to any behind-the-scenes developments. The mention of Hild’s crossbow, a nod to the technical challenges animators might face, hints at the scale of work involved should a new season ever get the green light.

Public Hopes and Creator’s Perspective

Yukimura didn’t stop there. In a follow-up post, he reflected on the origins of such rumours, suggesting they may simply be a product of the audience’s enthusiasm for more episodes. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support, and even counted himself among those eager for a continuation.

“But I think the rumour starts because there are many people who want season 3,” he continued in a follow-up post. “Thank you. I am also one of those who wants season 3. Now I have some free time, so I can help out on the production site with something. Like going out to buy lunch boxes or whatever.”

His self-deprecating offer to assist with menial tasks on set, should production ever commence, adds a touch of levity to the situation. It’s clear that, for now, any talk of a new series remains wishful thinking rather than confirmed fact.

Vinland Saga’s Journey So Far

The manga, penned and illustrated by Yukimura, has spanned two decades, running from 2005 through to 2025. The anime adaptation first appeared in 2019, with a second series following in 2023. The initial run introduced viewers to Thorfinn, a young man driven by vengeance after his father’s death, who finds himself entangled with Viking mercenaries. The subsequent episodes shifted the narrative, focusing on Thorfinn’s evolving path and his encounter with Einar, a farmer whose own family tragedy mirrors his own.

Despite the lack of concrete news about a third series, the appetite for more remains strong. The story’s blend of historical drama and personal struggle has clearly struck a chord, leaving audiences keen for further developments.

Looking Ahead

While the wait continues, those eager for fresh anime content might do well to keep an eye on upcoming releases slated for 2026. In the meantime, the Vinland Saga community will have to content itself with speculation, rewatching old episodes, and perhaps a bit of wishful thinking about what the future might hold.
